My Apple TV recognizes the movies I have in iTunes, however, when I try to play the movies it just gets stuck on the buffering screen. It does play music with no problem.

To go into depth, I am trying to connect to the "Computers" menu on the Apple TV screen. It does recognize the files are there so I know that it's connecting to my computer.
Also, when I try to play the movies through my MacBook Pro using AirPlay, I get the same result.
That would indicate a network issue.
Check that router is up to date. If on wifi try ethernet.
Go to istumbler.net to get a report of the network, check signal strength and noise.
Reboot ATV and router.
I thought it might be a network issue as well but I just tried connecting to my iMac and using my library there and it seems to work fine. Must be an issue with my MBP which I have shut down and restarted multiple times. Hmmm...
Are they both in the same location? Both running up to date OS and iTunes?
Have you tried streaming via MBP with ATV connected by ethernet?
My network is fine, but since it had the last update, that's about all mine will do as well. It simply won't stop buffering, and pretty much refuses to play anything. I can watch it on itunes just fine, and stream to my ipad with no problem, but not to apple tv. what did the update break and when will they fix it?
How have you verified that the network is fine?
The update wouldn't have caused this on it's own.
Same problem - only since last update to itunes. Working fin before - now the appleTV will not connect to my computer. It can see it - but the wheel spins, times out, and then un-helpful "make sure home sharing is on" blather. All software up to date, network is absolutely fine otherwise. Have restarted everything. Not happy!
same issue for me....apple tv will not connect to my computer at all....Netflix is fine and so is everything else on the menu...just says "make sure home sharing is on"....was working just fine until the software update on April 4th, 2014...need help if anyone knows what to do
I had this issue too, but it turns out the problem was that I had also recently changed my password for iTunes and hadn't changed it in AppleTV. Suddenly, all of my computer content was timing out, even though I could see it in the menu. After I updated the password in AppleTV, everything played normally once again.
Same issue with me. It's perpetually buffering. Absolutely no changes were made to my network settings/modem. This happened after I updated to ATV 6.1 and iTunes 11.1.5 on April 8th.
Interference can occur at any time.
Try deauthorizing all your computers in iTunes and authorizing them again. Seems to have done the trick.
I am having the same problem, which occurred 4 months ago or so. I've tried everything. I've reset router and apple tv, opened all recommended ports on the router, dauthorized computers, signed out of itunes, apple tv, home sharing etc and re-signed back in, opened firewall in windows 8.1... all with no results at all. It just keeps doing the same message as previously messaged.... 😠
Thinking back to when this happened I suspect that it may have been because I deferred the "restart your computer now" option when the first update came through. There was then a second apple update, before I had restarted, and the restart wasn't then mandated. Perhaps this caused the mess. It might explain why this doesn't seem to be a very widespread problem. I haven't looked yet to see if the latest update fixed it. Also haven't reinstalled itunes, which i assume will fix the problem -- but I think will mean I lose all my downloaded stuff, which is a pain.
I had the same probblem. I did a restart from the AppleTV General menu and it solved the problem.
