What To Do If Your iDevice or Computer Is Lost Or Stolen
iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi or cellular. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

Would be really nice if the Find my iPhone (iDevice) app was available for those whom are or can not run iOS7. Apple has allowed a few (but not enough) multiple app versions, seems like this one should be on the list.
Since thiefs can put an iDevice in recovery and bypass any passcode, turn off iCloud & location services plus replace the sim etc. etc. am thinking the only real satisfaction one can have after theft is to get the device blacklisted.
Just my 2¢
So what IOS are you on?
This app was available when I had my 3GS, but when the updated IOS you didn't need to download the app, all you had to do was have it turn on in icloud settings.

Go to iCloud.com and use FindMyiPhone.

Except putting in it Recovery mode will not remove the Activation Lock.
I have it on my iPad 1 running 5.1.1....

Have several iDevices, none with the app and none with iOS7. Some apps even though the info page says iOS7 will still download after a screen that says "take me to the old app" or something like that.
Do you have an iCloud account?

"Go to iCloud.com and use FindMyiPhone"
Would this work even if the Find my iPhone app was not installed on the iDevice?
No iCloud account, does not seem to be an opton as our Macintosh computers run OS 10.6 (Mobile Me is present but defunct I believe).
What iOS are you running on your devices? Have you tried to download the Find My iPhone app from the App Store?
Cheers,
GB

Yes it will.
You don't need to install the app to turn on FindMyiPhone.

You can download and run the app on iOS devce or got to iCloud.com.
"What iOS are you running on your devices? Have you tried to download the Find My iPhone app from the App Store?"
Can not be done sadly with our devices running iOS3, 4, 5, or 6
