Would this work even if the Find my iPhone app was not installed on the iDevice?
Yes it will.
You don't need to install the app to turn on FindMyiPhone.

Thanks Chris, will create an iCloud accoiunt and try this tomorrow.
You already have an iCloud account.
It is your AppleID & password.
So when you have tried to download the app it doesn't give you the option to download a compatible version?
Regardless, Chris has indicated that you do not need to download it to turn the function on. Go to Settings>iCloud and turn on Find my iPhone under iCloud. Again, I am running 5.1.1 on my iPad, and I have Find My iPad turned on under Settings>iCloud. (I also have the app on my iPad, so that is why I wasn't sure if you actually needed it in order to have the option to turn it on in iCloud).
Cheers,
GB

The iPhone in question is already missing.
FindMyiPhone app will help you locate another iDevice or Mac Computer that alrady has FindMyiPhone (not the app) enabled.
Wow, I totally lost track of the initial question! MY BAD! Thanks for pointing that out.... 😊

Oh, wait a mintue...icwvx was not the OP, and didn't indicate that they were dealing with a lost device. Just seemed to be a bit misinformed about what level of iOS one needed to be able to take advantage of the Find My iPhone app....
Am I losing it?

Chris-
Checked it out, works fine with devices running iOS5 (even 4.2, I remember reading) or newer.
Does mean having location services on with iCloud checked which a theif would most likely not.

Not unless you use this NEW workaround I just read about. I say new because Apple used to detect your iOS version and then download the corredt app version (if such was still available).
Apple now requires that you download the new version (i.e. with your PC). Then using your pre iOS7 device you go to the Store and you will be offered download of the device specific version.
The next step is to delete the iOS7 version from your PC then sync your device so that the device specific version gets backed up.
