Accessing external back up drive

We had to replace the hard drive in our Imac (OS X version 10.6.8). We can no longer access our Seagate external back up drive. It tells us we do not have permission. I can open the permission box. Under all the users it says their permission is "custom". If I try to change any of them to "read & write" or any other option, it automatically reverts back to "custom" We have played ping pong back & forth between Seagate & Apple Support, but both feel it is the others' problem. Anybody else have this problem or any ideas on solutions? Of course this happens as we are trying to access pics for our kids yearbook due in 2 weeks 😟....

You've been through a lot between having your drive replaced and then all this, I'd take some time to just breath deeply and use the system to make sure nothing else pops up.

After a decent interval you can think about upgrading. You'll need to take into account the Mac you have (not all Macs can run the latest OS) what software you have now (not all software will run on the new OS) and how you use the system.

When you're ready to think about doing the upgrade, post the the Mavericks community and the issue can be addressed.
