List of Pages Pages 5.2 fixes and bugs

Please put together here any Pages 5.2 fixes you have tested that work.

Also document any Pages 5.2 bugs.

If you have a standing issue from Pages 5, 5.01 or 5.1 can you test if Pages 5.2 corrects them.

I think that might be where the bug lies.

I should be able to make both a 7x10 and a 10x7 page in Menu>Page Setup and then see a page size in the Document Inspector of 7x10 with the portrait orientation checked and also a page size of 10x7 with the portrait orientation checked depending on which of the custom sizes I select in Menu>Page Setup.

But what I'm seeing is when I select the new 10x7 page size in Menu>Page Setup, the Document Inspector comes up with the Landscape orientation checked and when I go back to check Menu>Page Setup, it's gone back to the 7x10 page size. I can't make the Document Inspector show both 10x7 page size and Portrain orientation.

I think you have got confused by the rotation.

The pages can be wide or tall, straight or rotated.

Here are the 4 options:

I can't print to your printer but the pdfs work and the custom sizes apply with both straight feed & rotated feed.

The things I do for you. I am going to have to reset up my computer to get back to the nice clean metric measures. I am sure my Mac is feeling all dirty, and just wants desperately to scrub itself down in the shower! 😉

Thank you for doing all that work,

but I don't think I am confused by the rotation. I think this is a legacy problem with Pages 9.

I understand the 4 possibilities perfectly. Mine matches the 4th one. The paper must enter the printer as 7x10, but it should print in Landscape. It all makes perfect sense, except that it doesn't print what it should. I would have blamed the Epson driver, but as I wrote before, I can Print to PDF from Pages and then open the document in Preview and it prints perfectly.

Here are 3 screenshots. ( It's even more confusing that you might think because the actual greeting card is in Portrait mode, that is, it opens on the right. ) The first image is the setup in Pages 5.2, and the 2nd is the print dialog box, and the 3rd is the printed result in draft mode. I ran out of paper doint tests and must go buy more to continue testing, but it's not looking good for Pages 5.2. Right now, even if I can get an orientation that works, I'm thinking I'd have to blow ink and draft paper to be certain it's working since I can't trust the preview in the print dialog box.

(It's also a bug that the print doesn't match the view in the Pages print dialog box, but that was true in earlier versions)

The other problem I'm having and which I tried to refer to earlier is that the 10x7 page size doesn't stick. Did you try looking at the Page Setup AFTER you went to look at the Inspector for the 10x7 page size? When I select my custom 10x7 page size, (and then close the box because it doesn't let you keep it open), then go look at the checkmark in the Document Format inspector, THEN go back to look at Page Setup, it has gone BACK to the 7x10 page size, no matter which page orientation was checkmarked.

Again I think what you are referring to is what you see in the Document sidebar.

That shows the on screen layout ie whether it is Portrait or Landscape, either of which is achieved with a combination of size and rotation.

A tall page size needs to be rotated to be landscape, exactly what you have.

The alternative is to set up a wide page size and not rotate it.

The third combination is how the paper is fed into the printer which can be short edge first or wide edge first.

In my experience the choices in Page Setup… stick and are correct for the combination of size and rotation.

Some users are confused by the shapes of the icons for the rotation in Pages Set-up that has nothing to do with the shape of the paper at all. Just pay attention to the direction of the figure on the sheet that always feeds into the printer head first.

This shouldn't have anything to do with Pages '09. You are working in Pages 5.2.

The other thing you don't have is 67 documents that were made with this same layout in Pages '09. Fortunately, you had mentioned that Pages '09 is still on our systems, just hiding in the Applications folder, or I would be in real panic mode right now. Thanks for that!

There are many things I need to try when I get more time. I list them here in case others are having the same problem.

Look at the Pages 5.2 Card templates and see if my setup can print them (although I suspect it's a full half-page card- (still a US Letter size-and not this smaller 7x10.)

See if any driver updates are available for my Epson Stylus Pro 3800. I seriously doubt this is the issue, however, since I can can the PDF version of the file perfectly, just like Pages '09 worked. Do you happen to know what controls the print dialog box? Is it the print driver?

Make a card from scratch to eliminate alll connection to Pages '09. I was really tempted to delete the custom page size I created before the update, but I don't want to mess up the documents that still use it. I still don't understand why my Page Setup in Pages 5.2 always returns to that page size. I even tried selecting my new custom 10x7 and doing a Save which usually saves the print settings and it still goes back to 7x10 the next time I open it. ( I did try creating a differently named 7x10 and it STILL went back to the original 7x10 which doesn't seem right)

See if there is any way possible my printer could print with the 10in side feeding in. Previously there was a limitation in that only the sheet feeder was able to print this small, and only up to 8.5" feeding in.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help,

Welp...

No one adressed my issue regarding the alignment guides for images, so I guess it wasn't a problem for anyone other than myself...

On the off hand that this IS an issue for others, I figured I'd post the solution I learned yesterday at my local Apple Store:

For guidlines to behave as they did prior to Pages 5.2, the document must be converted from Word Processing format to Page Layout format!

It's that simple.

The Printer Driver does control the Printer dialogue to at least the extent of including its own features.

Whether the fact they nearly all look essentialy the same except for those special features is of Apple's doing or the Printer manufacturer simply following Apple's guidelines I don't know, but where others have had trouble with printing, a driver update has generally resolved it.

If you have the very latest Printer Driver for your model and you have contacted the manufacturer with your issues, you may have exhausted your options there, and the rest is beyond your control.

If I were in your shoes and had so many files depending on this working I would take the practical measure of using Pages '09. Battling Apple and Epson is an exercise in futility.
