Connecting to HP PSC 1510 via network

I purchased the HP PSC 1510 printer with my MacBook Pro. When I connect it to my mac via USB, it works fine. However, I would rather be able to connect via my home network. I have the printer connected to my PC desktop (which it also works fine with), but when I try to connect via the network on my MacBook Pro, and I print, it prints gibberish. What do I need to do to get this to work? I contacted HP, and they told me to ask Apple...I have been able to print via the network at my office, but those printers have their own IP addresses. Thanks for any help.

sorry to hear that. i have done some research and i think we are out of luck. it seems on mac os x there are 2 types of printer drivers (now i am not an expert on this, i just gathered this from some research): usb-only or CUPS. seems usb-only is much easier for printer manufacturers (maybe because they can reuse mac os 9 usb drivers), so that is what most printers come with. CUPS drivers on the other hand are pretty much transport/connection independent. they can work over usb, firewire, samba, etc. this allows pretty easy sharing of printers... unfortunately most manufacturers do not provide them (maybe they want you to by a more expensive printer that has networking built in).. there are many open source drivers that are CUPS for macos (search for guten print). however, there does not seem to be one for the psc 1510, though most other hp printers have it.

maybe someone else could help us, but i think the only way to share the hp psc 1510 in a mixed pc/mac setup would be to connect it to a mac, and then share it using bonjour, or other methods described on ifelix (ie have a pc use the applewriter postscript driver)..

unfortunately i do not have a mac print server lying around...

good luck.

Hi, I am brand new to the MAC world, but I had the same issue trying to get my macbook pro to print over my windows network. I was able to do it using a program called Gutenprint. You can find info about this program at the link below. The printer you have is not listed, but there is a PSC 2110 listed. Anyway, I thought you may find this interesting.

thanks macman.

unforuntately the guten-print package does not have a driver for the psc 1500, though it seems almost all other psc's! but as an update, i did get the printer to work using the guten print hp deskjet 990c driver (CUPS). i think i am losing some of the more fancy options of the 1510, but at least i can print. hope this helps.

thanks.

ahoy astrosteven...

sorry for the late reply, wife left the macbook plugged in on the bed covered with heavy blankets... so the hard drive died (from the heat i suppose). just got the repaired hd from apple.

as for configuring the printer, i used the oft-discussed "option" click when clicking the "More Printers..." button in printer setup utility. then, i go to advanced, select "Windows Printer via SAMBA", and in the "Device URI" field, i enter the username and password, then the ip address of printer server (though i think the simple samba/windows networking computer name will work), followed by a slash and then printer name. eg: smb://login:password@SERVER/PRINTER then i just used the hp deskjet 990c driver (which i installed with gutenprint 5.0). using the deskjet 990c driver was a suggestion directly from hp support...

some notes:

for "Device Name" i just used whatever..

this did not work when the printer name on the server had either spaces OR dashes OR underscores... who knows why?

i used the gutenprint 5.0 drivers for mac available here http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3

of course, i have to re setup this up again, so i will post again if i have any new info... good luck.

update:

after reinstalling macos x, i was able to add the printer connected to the samba server via the printer browser that is available, but usually never works. in the interim the only change to our network was "updating" the router firmware to a previous release (we have a dlink 524, that when using the latest firmware with WPA-PSK enabled, freezes every few hours). perhaps the router was somehow blocking the browsing of printers. so i browsed to the server, entered my login info, then selected the printer and used the already installed hp/gimp driver for the deskjet 900 series (as previously discussed).. i have only printed black and white, but works great so far. another note, i have not even installed the latest guten-print drivers (the latest have a specific hp deskjet 990c driver... but the 900 series driver included with macos x seems to be working fine)..

maybe this will help. perhaps something in the router is blocking the normal samba/windows networking discovery of the printers. this way you do not even need the ip address of the printer (which is the ip address of the computer it is connected to)..

hope this helps.
