Problem with video audio sync using Bluetooth headphones

I have recently bought a pair of beats studio wireless headphones but when using my ipad there are sync issues with video and audio. Many apps have the problem but sky go seems to be the worst followed by YouTube. Apple video is not too bad but not perfect.

iPad, iOS 7.1

Agreed, issue seems to have been resolved on Yosemite for a few weeks now, it would seem that it's now just an iOS issue. I took the liberty of testing it on my wife's HTC M8 and it's absolutely fine, so come on apple, this really isn't good enough! I use my iPad Air predominantly for watching video and it's now rendered useless. If it's not solved soon I may be taking a trip to the Apple Store and requesting a refund on my iPad Air and my Powerbeats 2 earphones.

Extremely disappointed!

If you otherwise like the iPad, you may want to try another brand of headphones. I had the same problem, returned the Beats and got a pair of the new Plantronics BeatPros. The audio sync is perfect and I honestly like them better in everyday vs the Beats Wireless. I don't know if they make something equivalent to the Powerbeats however. But for me the issue was 100% solved by ditching the Beats. The combination of terrible customer service and lag issues going unaddressed for months just turned me off to the whole product. Hopefully Apple makes some serious changes

You may be right.

The frustrating thing is i had generally stayed away from Beats products as I was convinced it was just a fashion trend rather than a top quality product. Apple's buyout however, tempted me as I had been looking for something wireless, lightweight and didn't make me look too stupid.

These Powerbeats2 looked pretty cool and I fell for it.

Thanks DP0350, I'll take a look at those.

Ok guys enough is enough - thought I’d do a quick test on my iPhone, iPad and MBP to check if the issue has been resolved or is still being current, if the latter hoping Apple fixing this stuff soon. For this test I’ll be viewing a HD trailer using Apple’s “Trailer" app and YouTube on my Apple devices using my Beats Studio Wireless.

Trailer: After the Fall

Test 1 (iPhone 6 Plus): problem with video audio sync

Test 2 (iPad Air): problem with video audio sync - Note: noticed when watching the trailer once the synch issue is still present, the second time there seems to be no issue… still not a great user experience!

Test 3 (MBP Retina, Mid 2012): no issue

So it seems there’s no issue on my MBP however Apple needs to fix the video audio sync on the iPhone and iPad Air.

The issue isn't with the Beats at all it's with IOS. It looks to me like the issue is that in order for the Bluetooth headphones to work IOS is using "Airplay" to send the audio instead of just using Bluetooth to connect. If you keep Bluetooth connected and switch airplay back to the device the sound goes off. I think Airplay is causing the lag.

Whatever it is it needs fixing, it's frustrating as ****!

Well, Shelia--the rest of us are watching the posts here and all over the web. We see that Beats Studio bluetooth headphones and the new PowerBeats Wireless have a problem syncing audit and video. I, for one, will not buy a paid of either for any price unless and until this issue is resolved. Keeping my money in my pocket . . . or going with another brand that has resolved this issue. Definitely not worth the price you are charging for a device with such a HUGE flaw.

Shame on Apple for promoting a headphone product in their stores that isn't fully compatible with their devices. I think it's deceiving of them not to have warned us that we can only use PowerBeats 2 for music. I haven't had any problems with Plantronics' Bluetooth products syncing with video on my iPhone, iPad and PowerBook but I don't think they fit nearly as well. The worst thing is that Apple and Beats (in bed together don't forget) appear that they don't care how dissatisfied we are. Not cool, Apple. You're spitting on our loyalty.

Perhaps this has already been said but my understanding (not saying it's right but it makes sense) it's a problem with the Bluetooth technology. The audio signal just simply isn't fast enough to keep with the video. I have this problem with different brands of headphones, speakers, etc. it's not one brand or lack of compatibility with Apple products (I feel like I am back in the mid to late 80's - yes I am old enough to have lived through that time and young enough to remember - when there was a lot of talk of compatibility).

What I have done that SOMETIMES works is to pause the video 15-20 seconds then push play and it will sync up or come close enough. I have also disconnected and reconnected the bluetooth device with some success. None if this ideal I know but if you would have asked me in 1988 when I used my first Mac(Plus) if I thought we would have wireless headphones I probably would have laughed. So maybe in the near future the delay will be a thing of the past.

Nov 16, 2014 11:31 PM in response to cookEcutter

@cookEcutter I can see what you are saying and if that were true it would be a major flaw in the testing of the product and especially now that it is an apple product to bring it to market when it doesn't support their latest hardware is a complete disaster. I have the fortune of having a device lab at my disposal through my employment and the crazy thing is that the headphones worked with 4 out of 5 Android smartphones I tested video on, it also works on my Macbook Pro now, although pre Yosemite there was an issue, so it was fixed for Mac OS, and the issue is now predominantly with iOS.

If it was a Bluetooth tech issue, then it shouldn't have been brought to market as this sort of compatibility issue should have been found in QA testing and fixed prior to release, especially if it works on their competitors devices and not their own. Kind of seems like a no-brainer to me!

This is a curious issue. I think it's a combination of factors including the Bluetooth version of the beats, the hardware of the device and the app. the majority of my issues with iOS have gone but I still have a delay with Netflix. I'm not sure if this is due to the iOS 8 update or the apps themselves. I've never had any problems with my Mac. But it can't be iOS alone as I have a bluetooth 4.0 speaker and there have never been any issues with wireless play those the any iOS app. I have also had some delay using my sons nexus 7 but again, it's only on certain apps. I think some take account of the processing delay better than others.

Nov 21, 2014 6:04 AM in response to jamieclarke

I agree. Seems the delay is with the beats, but I can't say it's the version, wouldn't brand new beats be up to date, maybe not.. I connect to my bose and the video and audio are in sync. I just got the beats yesterday and was disappointed to learn of the delay while trying to run on the treadmill and watch Netflix. I was pumped to receive the beats. Now I'm trying to decide what to do. These fit me the best. Will Apple be able to get this fixed? You'd think for a $3B investment Apple would want to get this fixed. I hope we hear from them soon.

Nov 22, 2014 6:58 AM in response to jamieclarke

Exact same issue here: brand new set of PowerBeats2 Wireless - purchased yesterday (11/21/2014) paired with a fully upgraded (IOS 8.1.1) iPad Air - the delay in audio while playing Netflix video is ~500-700ms and makes enjoying video impossible. There is no delay at all over wired headphones. I don't see any way to sync the streams with the IOS Netflix app. I've tried pairing and unpairing, pausing and resuming the stream, and turning off WIFI - nothing makes it better. The $200 PowerBeats2 are going back to the Apple Store today.

I have the Parrot Zik Wireless headphones. Tried watching a movie I downloaded through iTunes but the audio lag was terrible. I had to litterally look away from peoples lips when they spoke.

I was hoping to go to the Beats Studio wireless headphones. But I guess those have the same issue.

Bose has a wireless on ear headphone now. Ayone know if those are better?

I'm hoping apple figures this out because I'd like to get some wireless noise canceling beats with no lag.

Nov 25, 2014 10:00 AM in response to beniospit

tthe issue must be with the headphones. Monster's iSport BT wireless, Jaybird, Plantronics all work fine without audio delay. The aberration is the Powerbeats2. I don't see how it is an iOS issue. in addition, since Beats has been on its own without Monster, I find it strange that they released this product knowing that such an apparent issue with iOS exists When their competitors have products without this issue. I think it was a business decision, as Beats must have thought that nobody watches video when working out. They are arrogant in their customer service responses(first hand experience) and their arrogance carries over from their association to famous artists. people will blindly purchase heir products without regard to user experience. Some of their products are well made and have appeal. To release a blare my defective product at this price point is downright criminal
