My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

User uploaded file

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

To all staingate victims--

Apple has you covered. They know they f'd up big time so they are offering to fix the screens under their "quality program." No warranty needed. It was a manufacturer's defect that took them a while to figure out. Just visit an Apple Store, drop off your MacBook, and you'll have a new, stain-free screen in under a week.

I brought my MacBook Pro into the Manhattan Beach store on Saturday, no hassles. They estimated five business days but probably sooner than that. I have my work laptop in the meantime so it's not too inconvenient.

Hope this puts some of you at ease. Again, just bring your computer in to an Apple Store and they will take care of it free of charge.

I have a theory of how it works!!

Could someone halp me? Do you have infrared camera? Like this:

https://www.google.pl/search?q=infrared+camera&espv=2&biw=1197&bih=641&source=ln ms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=bxa4VIvOD-iX7Qa59YCICQ&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ

and make test:

1. put MacBook in 5 - 10'C lower temperature for one hour

2, bring back to higher temperature, don't open lid for 15 minutes

3. open it and take picture in infrared

I think we will see places where coating is coming off first.

My theory is: When you bring MacBook from lower temperature for example in winter when you have it in backpack to higher temperature in office, paarts of screen area near aluminium body are longer cold. When you open and wipe it cold parts have small water drops (due to dew point), Of course when it is really cold dont't turn it on! You should wait. When temp difference is not big probably you don't see any drops but still are some. Thats why after a couple of month of use you can see touchpad, keys and border printed on screen. Coating in this place coming of faster then in other parts of screen. Of course main reason is poor coating. This theory is only about why it is coming of first that way.

I agree - how do we attract attention to this?

I have tried to find ways to contact Apple directly - but in Africa, it is a different thing contacting Apple, than in Europe and Denmark.

And I am not even sure that the staff from Apple follow the threads in this forum...

At least I see no reply from Apple - only more comments from unsatisfied customers.

I am really frustrated as I now have to spend some $ 950 on replacing the screen.

That is around 1/3 of the cost of the machine.

For not only is it apparently not covered by the warranty (which is VERY surprising)

but the entire screen case (!!!) has to be replaced.

You cannot replace the glass only.

Imagine!

Apple has to address this issue.

So any suggestions how to bring attention to this?

It's just shocking to see your images of obviously unusable screens. Wasn't the retina display one of the key reasons why we as customers bought this particular product? Threatening to see Apple's reactions so far on this issue. I think they better should come up with an appropriate replacement program to get this issue resolved quickly and customers happy again…

Best of luck with getting this resolved soon!

Benjamin

Hi!

I have the same problem and it made me really sad.

I'm now an Apple fanboy for almost 10 years. I've all products starting from the first iPhone and the first G4 Macbook. One reason for this was the excellent customer support I used several times. But now with this very bad display problem they leave me totally alone. I contacted them 2 times and every time they told me, it was my fault. This is now my 4th macbook and I cleaned them all without any problems and now I should be to stupid to clean it the right way?!

Does anybody have an idea what I can do you? Is there a way to send an appeal?

Best,

Claudius

I left my in service. After 10 days (!!!) they sent me information I can pick it back with repair refuse. When I left it in service I ordered to notice on receipt that there are only damage on screen border. They took additional pictures. When I received it I could see scratches in the center.

They made it in transport or in service!!

I bought it in Jan 2014

The same issue here, late 2013 MBP 15". Should not be a 'skin acidity' issue because the laptop has been used with external keyboard and mouse, also this is my 4th Macbook and I'm the only user. The coating is starting to come off in the shape of the touchpad square, sort of an outline at this point. I'm disappointed with this product, paid over 3K for it and waited for a 2nd generation so they can iron out all the issues. Just ran out of standard 1 year warranty.

Dear fellow Apple users.

The anti-glare coating coming off is a obviously a widespread problem affecting many users.

And to fix it the entire screen box (yes, all of it) must be changed, something that amounts to around 1/3 of the price of the computer.

Reading through the many posts complaining to Apple "Care" about the problem has been in vain.

It seems that Apple refuses to recognise the problem.

Utterly unacceptable!

Apart from posting our comments and complaining to Apple,

does anyone have suggestions as to how we can bring attention to this problem?

Many greetings

I have had the same problem on two consecutive Macbooks (Air and MBR13, late 2014). These are not "stains" - it is the anti-reflective coating peeling off the display. This coating seems to be extremly sensitive to finger fat / sweat. That is why it usually starts to comes off in places where the most-used keyboard keys touch the display. I tried to avoid the problem by placing a piece of cloth between the display and the keyboard every time i close the notebook. But I still got a new "stain" on the upper left of the display frame. Obviously, that is the place where I touch the display when I adjust the viewing angle. It is really a shame Apple has not addressed this problem in years - it must be a well-known issue by know, and it is disturbing cosmetically, at the very least, in a product that otherwise oozes quality.

Yes I am very sad too. Buy a computer for 3500 box and now the screen looks like.... and Apple say only we make mistake with cleaning. I almost cant belife this..... but now is like it is.

Maybe somebody know a workaround to clean the monitor take this anti reflex skin off, and later maybe can but some anti reflex film.

I am really sad too about this Apple response. Apple Care won't repair/replace my MacBook Pro, I should pay for the repair.. Sorry Apple but this was the wrong answer. I've paid around 2.500 € for this MacBook Pro Retina to get a great display and now stains overall my display. The glass in front of the iSight cam has also stains.

I really hope that Apple changes his decision about this case and helps us soon.

Yes this solution should works. Not perfect but it should works. I am looking for good anti-glare film. Maybe something like matt foil.
