My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

User uploaded file

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

To all staingate victims--

Apple has you covered. They know they f'd up big time so they are offering to fix the screens under their "quality program." No warranty needed. It was a manufacturer's defect that took them a while to figure out. Just visit an Apple Store, drop off your MacBook, and you'll have a new, stain-free screen in under a week.

I brought my MacBook Pro into the Manhattan Beach store on Saturday, no hassles. They estimated five business days but probably sooner than that. I have my work laptop in the meantime so it's not too inconvenient.

Hope this puts some of you at ease. Again, just bring your computer in to an Apple Store and they will take care of it free of charge.

I'm using a Moshi iVisor which hides the faulty patches around the bezel and hopefully will stop it spreading to the screen proper. Apple sell these directly from their store so I'd hope removing it won't strip the AR coating further (though pretty sure it will). The protector creates a diffused/grainy effect which isn't ideal, but also eliminates the annoying reflection - so swings and roundabouts.

Unbelievable 😠😮😟

I have the same issue and was just about posting a question, when I saw this posting. I was afraid that I was doing something wrong, but apparently just simply touching the screen and closing the lid is enough to cause this problem. And by the looks of things, I'm one of the MANY that have the wrong fingers!

Considering that I paid Euro 2400 for my Macbook Pro, it is a shame. This is second time that I'm bitten by the believe that Apple products are more expensive because they have a better quality. The first one was when I bought the iPhone 4 and had reception problems, because even then I had the wrong fingers/hand, holding the phone apparently wrong.

I'm seriously disappointed!

Today I got reply from Apple's Relations Executive in Ireland after having the engineering team overlook my case once again:

"It is caused by external factors like grease from my fingers or the use of liquids. And it is not covered by warranty."

I am henceforth referred to Apple website, where I am welcome to ask any question or to one of their authorised retailers

who will be happy to replace the screen for around US$ 950.

Please view the Facebook group for further comments.

With kind regards

"Find and share solutions with Apple users around the world." That is the headline to this support site.

But I see to my surprise that both the link to the petition and to the facebook group have been removed "by host".

What is going on, Apple?

This is absurd. An anti reflex coating correctly applied does not peal of due to grease from fingers. This answer is absolutely ridiculous. A lie by Apple to abdicate from its customer responsibility. 😟 Once more: I have insider knowledge of AR coating processes and its resistance and Apple's reply it is simply not the truth. Period.

I'm going through the process of removing the coating using a soft cotton cloth and window cleaner. It is a very slow process as I don't won't to apply pressure. Were I managed to remove the coating to screen looks much better. However, at some places the coating doesn't want to go. So far I spent about an hour of gently massaging my screen. I have about 70% of the coating off. I will post results once I'm done.

I have to tell that I am also heavily suffering from stains on my Macbook Pro Retina Mid 2012:

I already contacted my Apple Service point here in Germany - unfortunately Apple is declining a repair of the faulty display EVEN with active Apple Care status! For me - until last week a happy longterm Apple user - this is like a smash in the face. Apple is blaming me for wrong cleaning - which I can just decline, having always(!) just used water and paper tissues for cleaning.

So what to do? Is this really the last and absolutely not customer-orientated answer from Apple?

Feb 11, 2015 7:09 AM in response to Miguel Caballero

Of course it is absurd.

It is definitely a failed production run of anti reflex coating process.

Just imagine, if the AR coating of your [optical] glasses will peal of as easily like from Apple sceens. Each optician in this wold will give you a million excuses and glasses will be replaced without dispute - even if long time out of warranty.

Customer friendly behavior is not one of Apples strength. 😟

Apparently, it seems that Apple thinks, they do not have stand for that. This is so poor from one of the richest companies of the world.

Apple only want's to abdicate from it's liability to customers, that they have some MBPRs out there with lousy AR coating.

Same for me in Spain , exactly same words , they say wrong cleaning.....

Is absurd.

Absolutely - what really wonders me that Apple is trying to claim this as a minor issue and even better an issue which should be caused by the customer because of wrong cleaning.

The amount of complaints and replies within this thread alone should show Apple (logically and from a rational standpoint) that something is wrong and that it simply HAS TO BE some quality / production issue....

Like all of us are writing: for me it is still not understable how Apple is treating us without REALLY investigating this issue....
