My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

User uploaded file

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

UPDATE

January 24, 2017

To all staingate victims--

Apple has you covered. They know they f'd up big time so they are offering to fix the screens under their "quality program." No warranty needed. It was a manufacturer's defect that took them a while to figure out. Just visit an Apple Store, drop off your MacBook, and you'll have a new, stain-free screen in under a week.

I brought my MacBook Pro into the Manhattan Beach store on Saturday, no hassles. They estimated five business days but probably sooner than that. I have my work laptop in the meantime so it's not too inconvenient.

Hope this puts some of you at ease. Again, just bring your computer in to an Apple Store and they will take care of it free of charge.

So I just came back from an Apple Store here in the UK, the staff were well aware of the replacement program. The exchange was like nothing ever happened.

I just opened the laptop pointed at the screen and he said 'oh, you are one of the ...' ... 'yes exactly, this started to come off on its own, you know; I know there's a replacement program now ... ' ... 'absolutely'

The part was in store, was changed immediately and in a few hours I was collecting it back. I was talking to another staff member about the eventuality this might happen again and he said 'I think they have changed the AR coating process itself'.

Obviously a speculative comment but was really much going along with what early on in this thread an AR coating technologies engineer was saying: that the fault was probably in the way the coating is applied.

So in the end, thanks again to everyone of those that have helped to get this issue heard, those that have set up the websites, those that have kept the discussion going, those that have simply helped and welcomed the ones coming late and unprepared. Popular wisdom is that united we stand, divided we fall. And that is so true of this little unimportant story too.

Needless to say the success was not easy. Many have had to grow their skin thick for all the work of a few that actively tried to jeopardise our chances by cutting through us, to divide, make people feel guilty, and send everybody alone on their own, to smash into the wall of customer services that one can safely say were not listening well.

So history has been written, the story is quite futile in itself, but nonetheless the universe will redistribute the karma. Some people will remain on the right side, some others should learn a lesson from that they were caught on the wrong side.

Thanks again (almost) all and bye bye..

GUYS JUST AS A REMINDER THIS IS THE SUMMARY OF THE STORY, I AM QUOTING CDEGAETA, AND IT NEEDS TO BE REMINDED: THERE IS A SOLUTION, GET IN TOUCH WITH APPLE, THEY WILL NOW REPLACE IT, SO YOU SHOULD WORK IT OUT WITH THEM.

Awesome! I had called Apple Support and they were well aware of the issue even though its been a low-key announcement. I have my Genius Bar appointment this Saturday so I'll be sure to provide an update here with my experience.

To all those still chiming in that they feel cheated or Apple isn't fixing this, PLEASE CALL APPLE NOW. A lot has changed in the past 2 weeks, Apple is well aware of the issue, and will fix it. So if you called before and have gotten no where, PLEASE CALL APPLE NOW.

If you have paid out of pocket to Apple previously to get this issue repaired, PLEASE CALL APPLE NOW. They WILL issue a refund for any documented out of pocket expenses paid to APPLE and APPLE ONLY. So if you tried your own homegrown fixes or brought it to a third party, you're out of luck with reimbursements.

And finally to Peter. You have to be one of the rudest experts I have ever encountered on these forums. I can't tell if you're trolling or not, but since you've gathered enough users points to be a 5 star, I'm lead to believe you think you're an elitist. But dude, CHILL OUT. You're literally picking on people for their English when clearly they're coming here looking for a life line because the support in their native country is lack luster. If anyone should report anything to the hosts, it should be a report on your behavior throughout this discussion. Regardless if people are poking you now for your original statements then, it's in the past! So be the bigger man and WALK AWAY. We now have a fix and we'll continue to help each other. If you keep coming back here because you're getting e-mail alerts because someone is replying to this very old discussion -- PLEASE ignore it, unsubscribe from it, or send it to spam. Just stay away man! You and your incendiary comments are no longer needed here.

And if a HOST happens to stumble upon this. Please for the love of God either lock this discussion and redirect it to a new one with a proper answer pointing out the procedure to get this fixed OR change the accepted answer on this existing discussion.

Now that this can be legitimately fixed by Apple, lets get back to HELPING PEOPLE. You know, the reason why this place exists in the first place.

Awesome news nicotem! Glad to hear you had a positive experience and a quick turn around! I'll be sure to update with my results from my Genius Bar visit tomorrow. I suggest those who have also gotten it successfully repaired to share their experience here. Since the hosts and experts have failed to turn this discussion around, it's now up to us! Let's show how easy it is to close the chapter on this frustrating experience!

Just got done at the Apple Store in NJ. They are fixing it but they have to send it out since they do not have the part in stock. It will take 3-5 days for me to get it back. A small price to pay for getting this resolved, so no complaints here. He took a look at it, said this is the first one we've seen in this store but that I am eligible and they will replace it. I didn't have to explain anything to him, once I showed him he knew exactly what I was there for. And mine isn't even that bad compared to some of the other horror pictures I've seen!

So to be on the safe side, I suggest backing up your Mac before going to your appointment in the event they have to send it out. If someone else ends up being wrong they'll take care of everything, but they're not responsible for insuring your data remains intact. SO BACKUP!

So far so good. I'll make one final update once I pick it back up from the store.

Purchased two retina MacBook pros in Nov. 2014, for my husband and myself, with AppleCare! Both started delaminating around 5 months, and reported the problem straight away. Now been dealing with this issue for nearly 6 months, spoken to reps. In USA, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Australia.

End result... "Accidental damage, Apple is not responsible".

Great that Apple is finally starting to take responsibility, so will try again. But so disheartened that we just want a refund and will go elsewhere.

Well I just got my MacBook back. I dropped it off Saturday morning and got it back today (Tuesday). All in all a 2 day turn around is pretty good! The screen looks great and I can put this issue behind me.

If you want to take the legal route that's your prerogative. But if they're fixing the issue just bring it in. It's a much better option that dealing with the frustration and cost the legal route can have. Especially when Apple has unlimited money for a legal defense. And in the end they are providing a fix free of charge.

SO if you're still sleeping on this and your screen is messed up from the laminate wearing off, CONTACT APPLE. Even if you have been turned away in the past about the very same issue. You will not be disappointed!

Hope you are right about this.

I was at the Malta iCentre today. As I'm one of those who removed the coating to be able to work, the Apple technician told me that they need evidence of the damage. The missing coating is no evidence, as I could have removed it just to get a replacement. Well, he did not say that, but it obviously boils down to it. He suggested to send them all images I took and prepare a letter explaining why I removed the coating. He would present it to Apple and maybe I'm lucky and they accept.

I sent the info and now I'm waiting. Cross fingers.
