How to zoom Magic Mouse/update?

How does one make the zoom function on Magic Mouse? The double-tapping with a single finger suggested in responses over a year old and described in the Smart Zoom under System Preferrences does not work for me. Neither does adjusting zoom in Accessibility Options. I'm running OS 10.8.5 and the battery on the mouse is charged 100%. I must say that Magic Mouse never worked very well for me, and though I bought this one about 2 years ago I'm only using it now because I lost the wireless antenna on my cheap-o Logitech.
