New To Mac Mini - External Speakers

Hello - new I'm new to Mac Mini (4 days now) and the support community.

I'm trying set up my new Mac Mini and have an issue with my external A525 speaker system from my old Dell that I'm trying to connect. I know the speakers and sub are working fine, although when I connect them via the 3.5mm plug to the Mac they are aren't connecting thus can't be seen?

Can anyone help please, do I need an adapter of some kind or could the socket on the Mac be at fault?

The same copied and pasted reply as McBlob but it's true - Good news a friend gave me another adapter and I'm up and running *** how, who, what and why I have no idea - but I'd like to say thank you for all your help, ideas and suggestions etc...
