    Lex, Andy,

She's got a mid-2009. Think there's any chance it's the SATA cable? All she'd have to do to find out is to move the drive to an external enclosure. If the problems go away it's the cable.

  • LexSchellings Level 5 Level 5 (6,655 points)

Hi Bob, good idea. I hope she does the the verify with DU, as I proposed. When not good, the "cable test" is next.

  • BobRz Level 5 Level 5 (6,115 points)

I'm wondering if an intermittent read could cause the VM symptom. That might not show up even with Disk Utility. The reason I say that is that my Airport cable went bad and it was a nightmare to troubleshoot. Turns out it would only happen when I moved the machine, like adjusting it on my lap. With DU she's likely to have the machine stationary during the test. Anyway.... given the 2009's SATA issues I thought it was worth mentioning.

  • LexSchellings Level 5 Level 5 (6,655 points)

It certainly is worth to check !

    Hi Lex, Andy, Bob.....

Back home now from work (11 hour day).  Earlier I tried to find AHT but it appears to not be on my computer and I couldn't seem to find a downloadable version for my MacBook Pro.  So I haven't been able to do the AHT but the Apple Store did run all their tests and they all came back clear.  Any suggestions for where to find the AHT?

I've just done the Verify Disk test that Les suggested and it came back OK.  Here's the final line of it:

"The volume MacIntosh HD appears to be OK".

I'll try the page swapping paste line in Terminal now.....and then try Rember again?

I'll let you know if it crashes.

    Ellie

  • BobRz Level 5 Level 5 (6,115 points)

    Ellie,

On a mid-2009 AHT would be on the disks that came with the computer.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

Try it if you can find them, as well as the Terminal command Lex suggested. As you can see, we had some discussions about this when you were gone. If it comes down to it, are you comfortable with taking the drive out of the computer for a test? Don't do it yet, let's see what happens with what you're doing now. Here's the process to give you an idea though.

    Hi Bob,

I will try to see if I can find the disks that came with the computer to see if I have AHT.

We've recently moved countries and stuff like that didn't always make it across the ocean!

I did the Terminal command and then tried to run Rember again.  It went further than it's ever gone but then crashed again.  The crash report is below.

I'm not particular techie  - but am handy (with home repairs for example).   Could I take the drive out???  You might be better able to answer that one as you know how difficult it is.

    Ellie,

The second link I sent you in the last message shows what's involved, but scratch that for now. The disk wouldn't really be involved while Rember is running I don't think. I have another question. When did you add that RAM and do you know where you bought it? Your machine probably only came with 2GB and you now have 8. Is there any chance you still have the original RAM somewhere? That would be the ideal test at this point... putting the original RAM back in and seeing if it solves the problem. We could then figure out what to do from there.

  • andyBall_uk Level 7 Level 7 (20,495 points)

You can download the AHT from Apple.

    See https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest#

and get the one for MacBookPro5,5 (Mac-F2268AC8)

You may find that it misbehaves as Rember did, but you can try, eh.

If that's the case, it rather confirms a hardware problem, but doesn't pin-point it. If you can come up with a formula for making it crash fairly promptly... an Apple store or AASP may be helpful enough to test it for you with different memory installed. Whoever sold the memory may have a lifetime warranty too.

Does Rember run for any longer in Safe mode ?

  • LexSchellings Level 5 Level 5 (6,655 points)

Still the same point of crash.

Difficult to pinpoint what hardware is failing, but try the easiest first: the Terminal command to stop paging.

  • LexSchellings Level 5 Level 5 (6,655 points)

The terminal command did not work, the same point of crash.

I'll try and find the terminal command to stop memory compression in Mavericks, wait..

  • LexSchellings Level 5 Level 5 (6,655 points)

This is theTerminal command to disable compressed memory in Mavericks:

    sudo nvram boot-args="vm_compressor=1"

copy/paste it in Terminal, then enter, then reboot.

  • EllieYork Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Hi Lex,

Did the paste in Terminal, rebooted and ran Rember.  Crashed again - report at bottom of this.  I downloaded the AHT that Andy recommended but there doesn't seem to be anything to open or run in the download???  Am I missing something?  It has a document called AHT - Read Me and a folder labelled system -in the folder is a folder called library and in that folder is another folder called CoreServices - but there is nothing in that folder?

Can't find the original disks - must not have survived the move.

The new RAM isn't really new - it was put in a couple of years ago.  Sadly we don't have the original 2 RAM as we didn't have an additional computer that could use it.

Should I keep running Rember and hope that it gets a bit further every time?  It does appear to inch further each run.

I can also take it back to the Apple store to get them to run tests again.

    Ellie

I am almost certain you have Ram problems. Since Mavericks handles Ram much more efficient than earlier OS, it may be that you did not have this panics with the older OS. You should replace the Ram. 2x4GB 1066MHz costs about 80-90€. (8GB is more than enough). It is absolutely necessary to buy a very good brand and the exact specs.

I personally would never buy anything else as Crucial or OWC. They both have a configurator on their site. Your Mac data: MacBookPro5,5 (Mac-F2268AC8) 13"-mid2009.

Wait on Andy and Bob to confirm my conclusion.

Lex is probably right. Mavericks does handle RAM very differently, therefore a problem could show up that you haven't seen before. There's one thing you can try that's pretty easy and only takes a small Phillips screwdriver. Once you take the bottom case off, you can see the two RAM modules. If you remove and clean them with an eraser it may solve your problem. Sometimes a little oxidation can build up which isn't even visible that might cause issues. If it doesn't fix your problem, you're only out of the 10 minutes it took to try it.

What I would do is to clean both sets of contacts on the module, then try the machine. If it doesn't work, remove one module and try again. If it fails, remove that module and put the other in. That will at least tell you if one is bad. Personally, if I found one was bad I'd first try to get the vendor to trade it on warranty. If that's not possible I'd replace both with one of the two vendors Lex recommended. You might not have to, I just prefer to have both from the same vendor. It reduces the likelihood of future problems.

This is how it'd be done. Read carefully.
