Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Sudden shutdown

It started after the 10.4.7 update. When I rebooted after the update, My G5 would just shut down right away, like someone pulled the power cord. iTunes was a startup item and caused this. And did so later when I would start iTunes myself.

I threw out caches, reset the PMU, unplugged all devices/cables, reset PRAM, ran Disk Utility and TechTool Pro, deleted iTunes and related files, re-installed iTunes. Not sure what did the trick but the shutdowns were gone.

But they came back. A few times after starting iTunes and also a few times when surfing the web. So more rounds of unplugging, resetting, etc. and it would be fine again.
Today it happened again after starting iTunes, and unplugging, resetting, etc. would not help. Same thing on a second hard drive with pretty much a clean install of OS X. So I can't use iTunes anymore...

This is from the sytem log:
Aug 19 21:47:23 localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122

I've seen more posts about the same problem, also at www.xlr8yourmac.com, and the same problem still happening after repair. Not sure if bringing it in for repair would help. The problem might be gone all of a sudden, who knows when it comes back, and it seems that nobody knows what the problem is so that would make it impossible to repair.

Or did I miss something? And I wonder what all people with the same problem did. Just living with the occasional shutdown now and then? I saw a much older post by sAik0, someone with the same Mac who had the same problem when starting iTunes and later wrote that iTunes wasn't the problem but that Topic has been archived and replies are not allowed...

My guess is that it's a problem with sound, iTunes talking to hardware. Or maybe QuickTime? (Because it happened a few times when surfing the web and maybe Safari needed QuickTime on some sites?) I'd like to hear from people with the same problem. And any idea what a good way would be to contact Apple about this? It looks like it's just faulty and Apple should fix this...

Hi Jereon.

It's been on 10.4.8. for as long as I can remember. At the time of the first shutdown she was just idling; loads of apps open but no stress on the processors. Second time I was eating my lunch with iTunes playing, when 'boom', off she went again. I've never had a problem with iTunes, and it had been playing for over an hour today before the 2nd shutdown.

I ran Disk Warrior and repaired/rebuilt everything after the 1st shutdown. She's now sleeping like a baby.

Jeroen - my serial is G8518xxxxxx.

Believe it or not that puts us in the same range. They were both built in similar timeframes.

I plugged our serials into this site to reveal specific details about your models.

Although I don't recall exactly when it started the random shutdowns, everything else pretty much matches the symptoms in this thread - same report of "PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122".

I've since handed the machine off to my wife since the repeated shutdowns ruined an external HD (USB powered) and I can't afford to lose data due to this problem. She continues to have the same problem. Most of the time it happens when she's playing World of Warcraft. There are no patterns that she is aware of.

If there is some other information from this machine I can quickly get to and might help, let me know and I'll post it. There's nothing special at all installed on it - pretty much a vanilla mac.

For me, the problem began (and ended) with Flip4Mac... the WMV player add-on. Soon after loading it on to watch WMV content on the web, I started having these strange shutdowns where my System Preferences/Monitors pane would appear for a second and then POOF... the power went off.

I backed off several programs from my G5 (including Flip4Mac) and the problem was gone. At this point I wasn't sure which program/extension was the problem, I was juts happy to have my reliable computer back.

Then, about a week ago, I loaded Flip4Mac again to watch a college basketball game online. The day later? Viola! The problem was back again. It's now been three days since I removed the program, and things have settled down again.

I don't know if this will help anyone else. It's just my experience.

Well, I had the same problem with my Power Mac dual 2.5 ghz G5 with random shut down. In my case I was lucky to had purchase the extended Apple Care because they replaced the computer with a Mac Pro.

Although, I lost a month and a half of revenue due to the re-occurring problem after being in the shop for 4 times and a lot of frustration. Apple Care replaced the CPU 2 times, logic board, power supply, and fans. Until they finally decided to replace my Power Mac.

Here is the specs of the old Power Mac:

Model: Power Mac G5 (June 2004)
Serial #: G8508xxxxxx

running 10.4.8

So if anyone of you are still under warranty, you should take it to apple to get it serviced and hopefully they could fix it or reaplce it.
