Typing lag following Pages 5.2 update

Pages is running so slowly I can’t use it for work. Sentences lag after I type them, sometimes for minutes. Also scrolling lags and skips, and the thumbnails pane is absolutely crazy - it shows overlapping pages, missing pages, etc. The problem seems to be slightly exacerbated in longer documents, but does not seem to affect Word, TextEdit, SublimeText, TeXShop, or other text editors. It is also exacerbated by the general slowness of the computer, which is coming up on five years old now, but the problem is definitely Pages-specific, definitely only started after the update, and it definitely making it totally unusable. I'd really appreciate any advice, even simple stuff.

I've just upgraded to pages 5.2 (as part of the complete iWork update), on a mid-2009 Macbook Pro (running OS X 10.9.2), with a 2.23 GHz processor and 8 GB of RAM.

Thanks so much!

Does anyone have any advice? I have a 300 page doc with Endnote citations - a few weeks ago I completely re-did every single citation to make sure the new Pages 5 doc did not inherit any bugs from the old Pages 09 doc.

Now I have very bad typing lag halfway through the doc.

I tried breaking us my thesis into sections but no luck.

I tried cutting and pasting each chapter into a brand new document but no luck.

I have just finished writing a 60 pages document. It included 100 citations, pictures (~25), a few footnotes and 4 tables. And it didn’t lag too much. Actually, the lag occured a few times after pasting pictures but it didn’t last.

On the other hand, I have 3 pages long documents that lag badly. I have an impression that it is related to the use of endnote citations in footnotes. This seems to be an important contributor.

Another thing are schemes that include arrows, other shapes and texboxes. I made them in keynote on A4 sized slide, printed as pdf, and included them as pdf into my thesis. I had noticed, that using shapes (and grouping them to make a united scheme of picture) in Pages directly caused the lag to occur.

I was using Pages '09; then I upgraded to 5.2... which was laggy; so I switched back to '09. After some time I found solution (disabling spell check) and switch back to 5.2, but after some time I found application iA Writer, which I liked and started using instead of Pages. Mostly I do only writing, so I don't need all the fuctionality, and iA Writer can open and save .docx files; also it's distraction free text editor so that's why I'm don't use Pages anymore.

this is crazy. telling us to "just use another program" is not the answer. i am revising my dissertation, and i use pages because it is NOT buggy like word. i have been using it for 5+ years with no problems, and now all of a sudden it exhibits a serious typing lag. i can barely use it and it is supremely frustrating. i have tons of memory, hd space, no other stuff running but it and endnote and no pix. this is just crazy, and apple needs to fix it posthaste. my old copy works just fine, but this new computer my kid has won't use the old one with the old copy of endnote, so i am stuck with this buggy version and i am UNHAPPY. 😠

any new word on this yet?

Ne*na,

My Pages v5 has no interactive performance issues whatsoever. I do not use Endnote. I suggest visiting the Endnote site and determine if there is a newer release than what you have installed. Also, I would take a quick look at System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items to see if anything is starting up on login, that may be stealing CPU time. We have also found that adding Anti-Virus software to OS X can substantially interfere with the operating system performance (and stability).

The recommendations to use older Pages ’09 software, or in its absence, third-party products, is due to the large body of problems that Pages v5 causes to community user productivity. All those reviews in the OS X App Store for Pages v5 are just the visible part of the iceberg. Apple has seriously messed up word processing on the Mac, and by their very actions, appear to care less as to the user consequences.

there is no newer release as the apple has already posted all the updates and so has endnote. i have noticed that the lag appears to be more evident in sections than in what appear to be subsections. (i.e. the typing is really slow in pages that are big, hmm, "wider" in the thumbnails view than on smaller or "narrower" pages in the thumbnails view. this does not have anything to do with page orientation or margins or anything, btw.) in any case, i have tried eliminating sections and that does not alleviate the problem, as the problem also seems intermittent. this still ***** mightily!

Hi neeeeeena and all,

I've been suffering from this Pages (5.2) typing lag too, and it seems to have something to do with Endnote (7.1.1). I just made a new document by pasting my entire old one into a new Pages document, and... no lag. So I investigate, and see that when pasting it turns all Endnote citations into just text.

So I go back to the original, laggy, one, look at the end, and there's an extra "bibliography" section before the Section End, which I delete. I leave the "real" one, which has the Endnote citations (endnotes) in proper form. No lag.

Then I go back in, and find it's just complicated. First, it seems to not lag, then does. Then I go through the document and test different places. Some lag, some don't, even within the same paragraph or sentence! I can't figure out the pattern, except that the part I am working on right now is a laggy one! Grr.

Still sure it has something to do with Endnote, but can't diagnose further.
