If it is truly a "read only" then you won't be able to edit it. However, if you only have a "viewer" on your iPad and need an editing app, try Citrix ShareFile QuickEdit. Its free and will allow you to view and edit Excel files (as well as Word and Powerpoint files).

That is odd since I just downloaded on my iPad for $100 the new Microsoft Office App that is supposed to allow me to change and edit Excel documents.
