Has anyone experience iMac memory issues with One Drive (previously Sky Drive) - uses 5GB of my 8GB memory!

Years later it is still a problem. OneDrive hums along just fine, then all of a sudden it grabs 60 GB of memory, and I only have 8 GB RAM. I am going to increase the RAM to 16 GB on Mac Mini (2012) MacOS 10.12.5 and see if that helps.

I upgraded to 16 GB RAM, and it seems to lock up less often.

I have asked Microsoft about this, and they are walking me through a process. First thing we did was to delete the OneDrive entries in KeyChain. Then restart OneDrive, reconnect with passwords, etc. We'll see if that fixes the problem.

Coincidentally, just before I was able to do the procedure today, Microsoft forced an upgrade on me for OneDrive.

Hopefully, something has changed and OneDrive will behave.

I saw this problem on my dad's imac, I tried deleting the onedrive keychain entries as someone suggested here.

I restarted it and left it on overnight then checked back in the morning, it grew from 312MB to around 520MB. Restarted it again and it went back up to 312MB.

So I made a little cron job which will hopefully keep it under control (you can edit your crontab with crontab -e in terminal):

0 0,12 * * * * pkill OneDrive; sleep 3; open -a OneDrive

This will just restart OneDrive twice a day so that its memory usage doesn't grow out of control, if it works well I'll post back here.

UPDATE: my workaround seems to be working fine so far.

One change I made is restart it every hour instead of every 12 hours. This shouldn't interfere much with its work and will keep the memory leakage under even better control:

0 * * * * * pkill OneDrive; sleep 3; open -a OneDrive

Yes this is happening to me too, since the last upgrade. Eventually MacOS starts insisting I "Force Quit" all my applications as I have run out of application memory.

OneDrive doesn't appear in that list because it's not an application... but Activity Monotor clearly shows it's the culprit, taking up 5GB+ of RAM.

OneDrive (and SkyDrive before) keeps a folder on your Mac where the content is stored (and mirrored to the online folder)

If you have 5GB in your OneDrive folder it will require 5GB of space on your Mac.

Er... no, Csound1. We're talking about RAM, not disk space, being consumed by OneDrive. There is definitely a memory leak in this version of OneDrive.

I have ~200GB in my OneDrive and doubt anyone has that much RAM in their laptop ;-)

I have not had that behaviour at all with OneDrive, my installation shows 25MB in use.

If you are saying since the upgrade to Mavericks this has happened, remember Mavericks is designed to maximise (or rather optimise) the amount of RAM used. everything will seem to use much more RAM than before, but this is intended. It makes 4GB of RAM act like it was 6GB in performance terms.

If this is the only symptom, i.e. RAM seems to be much higher, don't worry.

Thanks for the info Peter. However it does seem to be a genine issue; the memory usage goes up and up and up, until Mavericks stars demanding you Force Quit application as you're out of application memory. At which point, OneDrive swallows up more... until you have to reboot. This is wrong.

Take screenshot of the memory tab (in Activity Monitor) and post it here, sort it by memory useage.

Typical - it's behaving itself today... after I restarted it to get that screenshot, it rose quickly to ~1.3GB but is staying there, drifting up and down a little. Still seems rather high usage, but it's not out of control (at the moment).

1.3GB is very high for a background process, it should be in the 15 to 35MB range.

Something is indeed wrong. Remove OneDrive and check your memory useage without it being there.
