Mac Pro Late 2013 and Samsung 4k monitor problem

I have the new Samsung 28" 4k screen (U28D590D) and it has tearing along the right edge when used with displayport. Any way to fix that? I tried different cables (all DisplayPort 1.2 complient) to be sure and have narrowed the issue to the Mac Pro. The HDMI works fine tho only @30hz so is a bit laggy in normal interaction. There is no way to turn on Multi-stream as indicated and I hope it isnt that this screen will never work.

I used text edit but already did the plain text option, now it only offers rich text, I had an option to save it in different plain text encodings and opted for unicode-8... should it be anything else?

hex dump... anything?

Yeah, all the spaces in your text file were replaced with non-breaking spaces (Option-Space). You need to do a search and replace in the text file - search for Option-Space and replace all occurrences with space.

Maybe there was something weird about the browser or text editor that you used to copy and paste the xml which preserved the non-breaking spaces used to format the xml in the web browser.

Jun 25, 2014 11:49 AM in response to Poyda

Weyhey! working fine now, just as joevt said... non-breaking spaces everywhere. Poyda, I used find-replace in text edit once I knew what was wrong, served its purpose, I have used text wrangler before, may download it for future use anyway.

I hope this helps anyone else with the same problem, with only basic technical knowledge, like myself.

Big-ups to Poyda and joevt, I now don't feel like I have totally wasted my money, awesome.

Poyda - did you run the corrected CVT-RB calculation 50hz or try the 56Hz (corrected or otherwise) in the end?

I am actually in the process of purchasing the new Mac Pro and 2 of the Samsung 4k monitors (U28D590D). After reading about the problems with the DisplayPort, I wasn't sure if this was going to be a good purchase. I read through each reply in this thread and am really happy to see there's at least a work around (even though it's not 60Hz yet). But even 50Hz is better then 30Hz on HDMI. I'm still on the fence; and I'm sure it'll be "officially fixed" once the public release comes out in the fall. Now I have to decide if I want to wait, or go ahead and get the pro with the dual screens and continue watching this thread to see how it all pans out 🙂

Great progress and thanks for all the instructions!

Did you consider the ASUS PB287Q monitor? Same panel, better stand, more features, VESA compatible mount.

Of course, you would need to override the EDID to fix the same problem if you're using an affected graphics card/driver. I guess the Samsung override file would work, but you would need to change the vendor and product ID in the file and in the file path/name to match the ASUS values. The ASUS monitor would then appear as a Samsung monitor.

I got the EDID for the Samsung from a hex dump from SwitchResX posted at MacRumors, used "echo 'paste hex here' | xxd -p -r > U28D590.bin" to convert to binary, then I used a utility called Lightware Matrix Controller v 3.4.6 (free) in Windows to edit the bin file, changed the primary timing to match SwitchResX's CVT-RB calculations for the desired timing. Then "xxd -p < U28D590.bin" to get the hex dump and pasted that into the override file using Property List Editor.app.

I think it would be cool if SwitchResX had an EDID editor like Lightware Matrix Controller or Phoenix EDID Designer 1.3 (I haven't tried the latter).

Hi tommfromomaha,

I am thinking to get one of those monitor. I have same "low end" Mac Pro. Could you please specify how did you connect monitor to your machine ? did you use stock cable (if any included) or did you use adaptor ? And if then what kind of adaptor exactly. I want to be ready when my monitor arrive. Overall - are you happy with quality ? I mean both built quality and picture. I know viewing angle is not too good,
