FIX: IPad turns on and off in a loop during charging, boots to home screen and reboots

Ok, after having my ipad 2 3rd Generation for about a year, its bombed out on me,playing on it until battery drained. Didn’t think anything of it, plugged into charge thinking it would be charged by the morning. This didn’t happen.

It was stuck on the apple sign, booted to home screen and switched off again due to low battery. Continued on this loop for the whole day……

I searched the internet and it seemed all doom and gloom that I would need to by another one. Then I stumbled upon a forum where the advice so far has worked for me.

The reason why it gets stuck in a loop is because the IPad was not shut down manually, so therefore keeps trying to boot up soon as it has some battery power. Problem is, its gone beyond a point and now and there isn’t enough battery life to boot to main or home screen after apple logo.

The remedy is quiet simple, follow these steps to get the ipad to home screen to power it down so it has sufficient time to charge up and boot normally and get off the endless loop.

  1. Plug into wall socket to get it charging.
  2. Wait until the apple logo appears and wants to boot up.
  3. QUICKLY hold down home button and reset/ sleep button at the same time until it reboots.
  4. Release buttons now. should now power down and reboot
  5. Repeat step 3 at least 30 to 40 times which is about 10 minutes in duration everytime you see the logo appear on the screen.
  6. Now Let IPad boot up fully, should see home screen with about 2% battery life
  7. QUICKLY hit the rest/ sleep button down for about 2 to 5 seconds.
  8. Swipe the screen to when slider appears to switch off the ipad.
  9. This will now power down the IPad which now will not reboot by itself so it can now charge without any interruption’s.
  10. Allow battery to charge for a least an hour or two without trying to put it on.
  11. Switch the IPad on
  12. You should now have about 10 to 20% battery Life
  13. Power it down again by holding the reset/ Sleep button down again and swipe the screen to power down, let it charge fully to 100% now which will take few hours
  14. Enjoy your IPad again 🙂 🙂

Lesson learnt. When your battery power is low, dont wait for it drain completely, rather power the pad down manually and let it charge when there is only about 2 to 4% battery life left.

Hope this guide helps people with the same problem as I had. Took me about 2 days of research and searching until I found a solution that worked. Hopefully this will assist anyone going through the same pain, and possibly not have to buy another one which seems to be the case when people take the pad to an istore with the same issue.

Cheers,

This simpler solution did not work for me. Nor did the longer process. I kept shutting it off after the apple logo appeared - for about 30 minutes and my fingers were sore. The home screen would finally come on, but not enough for me to swipe it off. This is a lousy feature of iPads and iPhones. There should be a much easier way to turn it off so that it doesn't keep restarting, draining the tiny bit of battery power and starting the loop over again. I still don't have a solution.

This finally worked for me, with a few modifications. Between #5 and #6 I had to do three restore/recoveries with a total of 30 minutes (not 10) of the Sleep/Home button shutdowns. Each time the restored image would boot and then lose power. But it would get farther for each restore. On the third I had enough time to hurry through the setup and managed to shut it down manually with 2% on the battery. It just goes to show that additonal variations are sometimes needed too :-)

I had the same problem but took a different approach...

My solution was to *trick the hardware* into staying off until there was enough charge to fully boot. All iPads and iPhones come with a temperature sensor that will automatically shut off an iOS device in extreme cold to protect the electronics. This does not affect the device's ability to be charged while off.

Knowing this I did the following:

1) Placed my iPad in the freezer door for 45 mins

2) With the iPad ice cold and forced to stay *off* thanks to the sensor, I plugged in the charger

3) iPad booted after 15 mins when the temperature sensor felt it was safe to boot

4) When it booted it had 23% power

Hope that helps someone.

There is another procedure which involves Recovery mode.

  1. Hold Home button and without releasing it connect iPad/iPhone to computer with running iTunes.
  2. Wait for "Connect to iTunes" symbol on iPad and release home button
  3. iPad will enter recovery mode. Don't try to do recovery in iTunes now because it will most likely fail.
  4. Unplug iPad from computer and plug it in charger. "Connect to iTunes" should appear again and reboot cycle will stop.
  5. Leave it charging for at least 30min.
  6. Plug it back in computer and now you can restore it from backup (if you have one) or set it up as a new iPad.
  7. Your iPad should be working now.

Thank you so much. After having tried wild child method( did not work for me, after 1 hour) I tried Simon,s method.I live in a hot country so figured I needed to leave it longer in the freezer, one and a half hours. When it came out I put the charger in and the battery icon appeared but that was all.I had to wait another hour of charging before it rebooted. So simple and in my case it worked on an old iPad 2. Thanks a lot Simon, you saved me some bucks xxxxx

I did what wildchild7778 suggested for 10 minutes then 20 and lost the will to live. I then followed pturk but find that even if I unplug the ipad it shows the apple logo then shuts down again. I tried to remove the charger as you suggested but the home screen just never comes on. I then did what apple said and connected it to the computer and tried to do the reboot system. It doesn't have enough battery to complete the reboot. I think my ipad is now royally F!"£ed!

Any suggestions?

Thank you sooooo much! I was playing on my iPad when it randomly shut down and I realized it was dead and trying to boot up. After a few times doing the force restart, it told me to plug the iPad into iTunes to restore it, which luckily for me, worked! I’m really glad you made this or I could be stuck for days without my iPad. Thank you so much.

Thank you Wildchild. After reading all the discussions and forums I stumbled upon this one. Then I read all the replies below. I did step 3 longer than 10 minutes and more than 40 times. This showed my battery on 6%. Then I managed to turn the iPad off as per your instructions. Now n hour n half later my iPad battery is on 32% and the home screen is on. Will leave it charging till it reaches 100%.

As someone else said in their reply - you have to be patient as it really does work in the end. Took me a couple of attempts but I wasn't going to give up so easily.

Thank you ever so much - I really appreciate it. May the good Lord give you success in all that you do.

PS: I forgot to mention that I have tried cooling down my iPad and have it charge then. I did so to a temperature of -14 degrees and I tried 1 hour, then two hours and last 10 hours of freezing it and every time I plugged it in it was all happy and tried starting up again being still stuck in the endless cycle. Does anybody know how cold it must be for it not to start up?

When I saw your post, I had the exact same issue except the procedure worked for me 1 day and I pad blacked out again. I took it to the Apple store in Chicago on North Michigan and North Ave and both places immediately told me that they could not repair the I pad and I had to buy a new one. One thing I do not understand, technology is good when it works, but I am not rich and I can't replace Apple products on a whim when they JUST STOP WORKING. Even with Apple Care, they will replace with refurbished but will only give you a 90 day warranty. I asked the tech what happens if my replacement I pad stops working on day 91 and he said "I am sorry, but you will have to replace it again". This just could not be right....seems so unfair and consumers just do not seem to have any other out when stuff like this happens. Now I have nobody to repair my Apple I Pad.

Hello All,

While performing step no.3, I get the the "Connect to iTunes logo", the moment I take out the USB cable (to connect it to iTunes on my macbook), the iPad switches off. The iPad isn't charging via my macbook. Anybody experienced this? Do I still have to continue step 3 till I get to the home screen or do something else?

Thanks!

Ok so there is a much easier solution to this problem. I used my iPad until the battery was completely flat, then when I went to charge it, it got stuck in the never ending reboot loop.

So here's what you need to do to fix this problem.

1. Plug in the charger

2. When the Apple logo appears, unplug the charger

3. As soon as you see the home screen appear, plug the charger back in. You need to do this quickly as the home screen only shows for a split second

4. The loading wheel should appear and shut down the iPad

5. Leave the iPad for a good 30mins or so just to get some battery life into before you start using it again.

WildChild7778, Thank you SO VERY much for posting this!!!! 🙂 I **think** this actually fixed my problem.

I had the exact problem you described. My IPAD 3 was stuck in the endless restarting / looping cycle and would continually re-start and not charge the battery beyond 1%. Then it would shut down and repeat the process before I could do anything. Your solution seems to have worked, I kept doing the cycle you recommended for about 15 minutes. Anyway, if it did not work, I will update and repost, otherwise consider the issue resolved!! I think you are correct about the cause, my iPad was plugged in and playing a video last night, but the combination of the fact that I plugged it in below 5% and the fact the power consumption must have been large, the iPad died without being properly shut down. Somehow, this must have caused the error. I recently updated to the most recent iOS, I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling message----I cannot thank you enough. You are the best! 🙂🙂

I had to modify the solution as home screen would never show up and restore mode didn't work.

Whenever I was trying to restore from iTunes (in few times I could put it into the restore mode) iPad would start another reboot loop and iTunes would loose iPad again, terminating restore.

1. I unplugged iPad from computer.

2. iTunes still could see it, so I unchecked wi-fi sync as well. (I'm not sure if this is necessary)

3. I did steps 2 and 3 as WildChild7778 did, that is to say I held down home button and reset/ sleep button at the same time, immediately after each time Apple logo showed up.

4. After 6-7 times iPad stopped the continuous boot up loop and the apple logo got stuck up on the screen forever.

5. This allowed me to do a restore from iTunes. I plugged it to computer again and started restore, this time it went uninterupted.

6. I backed up from an old backup.

This made me loose data I had since the last backup, but I got my iPad back...

(I got into this situation when I was trying to do too many updates at the same time. Do them one at a time.)
