iPhoto album on an external hard drive

My iMac hard drive was maxed out so I started running iPhoto on an external. An Apple Store employee showed me a shortcut (couple of key clicks) to switch between the iPhoto album on iMac and the external, however, I haven't done it for a while so I forgot how it was done. Can someone help?
