Shift key does not let me go into safe mode

I need to get into safe mode and have done the whole thing of waiting 10 seconds and then pressing and holding down shift and it does not work. There must be kore to it? I'm not even sure which is the shift key, is it the one below the capital letter button?

You have a Late 2013 iMac, so you probably have a Bluetooth keyboard.

In order to start up in safe mode, turn on your Mac and start holding the Shift key after hearing the startup sound. Hold it until you see the Apple logo on the screen. You will know if your Mac is starting up in safe mode if you see a bar below the Apple logo.

Try it again. Bluetooth keyboards are tricky, but it works.

If it does not work, try a different thing. Hold the Option (Alt) key while your Mac is starting up until you see different options in the screen. Select "Macintosh HD" and hold the Shift key. While you are holding the Shift key, also press the Enter key to start up in safe mode.
