Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Macbook consistently stop responding; takes forever to do things

Recently my mac has started to stop responding, all the time. I find the most trouble started with OS related interfaces. For example, I'd click the wifi button at the top and I'd get an instant pinwheel, the same went for the sound button as well. In addition, when I use the shortcuts on my keyboard to adjust volume or brightness, I'd often get no responses delayed as much as a minute or two. Almos everytime I click on the apple icon at the top I get the pinwheel. Opening folders, clicking buttons in interface menus. When I go into system preferences and I click a submenu it takes about 15 seconds to load.

Beyond the OS interface my programs stop responding all the time too. It's also taking noticibly longer to start up (I've restarted it about 5 times today accessing utilities and resetting the PRAM to try and fix it). Occasionally it seems a little better but it never seems to last long, perhaps as much as 5 minutes of smooth sailing until it starts freaking out again.

In the activity monitor I'm averaging about 96% idle. Looking at memory I think the usage is a little high (which would make sense for being slow) I have 8gb installed and it says I'm using 4gb, the other day when I checked I thought it was lower than that.

There's a kernal task that seems really high.

Process Name: kernal_task

Memory: 650mb

Any insight? Any ideas what's causing this? How can I fix it?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.

2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.

☞ Paste into the window of another application.

☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.

6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.

8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter

exec bash

and press return. Then paste the script again.

9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line

[Process completed]

to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.

11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

The system is heavily modified, but the modifications would have no effect in safe mode, which you say you tested.

Although you've already reinstalled OS X, it wasn't a clean reinstallation. I suggest that as the next step.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

If you use FileVault 2, then in Disk Utility select the icon of the FileVault volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted.

When you reboot, the Setup Assistant will launch to take you through the initial setup process. Follow the prompt to transfer the data from one of your backups. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

Okay so here's what's going on.

I made sure I had a good backup. I erased the disk. Then I reinstalled Mac OS X (it defaulted to Lion 10.7.5). I had misremembered your instructions and didn't use my backup immediately (and have not yet restored from that backup). This means that what my computer should be is a factory default version.

The responsiveness was improved, but still noticably sub-par. I let spotlight finish indexing because I thought that might be the reason behind the partially slowed interface. I feel as if less things cause such a paralyzing nonresponsivness but some things pause for still such a long period of time, and many things pause for a much shorter period of time. Thus I conclude there is still a problem because the performance is still poor.

I opened system preferences and it was nonresponsive for at least 30 seconds. I closed the menu, but shortly after decided to open it again. This time after the delay a notification popped up stating "The application System Preferences can't be opened. --600" Upon clicking okay on that notification it has paused for another 30+ second period.

I shut down my mac and booted it into the Apple Hardware Test mode (replaced by Apple Diagnostics on later models: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509). I performed an extended test and it reported no troubles found.

Upon restarting, where the mac symbol would be shown (during startup) instead was a flashing of that symbol, the symbol of the folder with the question mark on it, and the "prohibited" (cirlce with line through it) symbol. After flashing between these variety of symbols (in a sporadic fashion) it seems to now be holding steady on the apple logo.

I know the folder with the question mark indicates that the computer cannot find the files with which to boot up the computer. This can be caused by a failing/failed hard drive or by a broken cable which connects the harddrive to the rest of the computer (I have experienced this cable in my computer breaking before). It is possible that there is a short in it. If there is a short in this cable, that could explain why it is experiencing long delays (similar to a disc read error, it finds itself incapable of gathering the correct information and tries again); of course this is just an assumption on my part, I do not *know* that the computer would act in this way.

At this time my computer has been on the apple logo with the spinning "loading" icon beneath it for several minutes and I suspect it may never actually finish booting up. My next step will be to set up an appointment at an apple store and get them to check the aforementioned cable.

I forced a shut down and tried restarting and the same process of flashing symbols happened again.

Thank you for your assistance. I will be sure to post the conclusion to this issue once it is determined.

Macbook consistently stop responding; takes forever to do things
