message "The required index.xml file is missing."

I updated my OS a couple of weeks ago. Ever since then I receive the following message whenever I try to open a Pages document: The required index.xml file is missing. I first got this message when trying to open something sent from my iPad, that is why I updated. This morning I received the same message while trying to open a document created on this computer since it was updated. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks. Removing the numbers app from the dock and then downloading the numbers app again solved my problem (allowed me to open, on my mac pro, a numbers document created from my iPad). No more "the required index.xml file is missing" error messages! Apparently installing a new version of numbers doesn't always update the app icon in the dock (as you have already determined).

That is wrong advice and you appear to have repeated it all over the forum.

All Pages files no matter what version have the same file extension, .pages, despite being radically different formats and that is the problem. The System does not distinguish between them when you double click on the file, it opens the first version of Pages it encounters.

You need to right click on the file and choose the correct App version for the file. Unfortunately there are no clues to tell you which is which.

If you are unhappy with this and the removal of over 100 features plus the problems with transmitting files across devices, servers and different versions of OS X, rate/review Pages 5.5.2 in the App Store.

All I can say is that based on another user's earlier recommendation, I removed the App from the dock, opened up the new version again which placed it in the dock, and was then able to open up my file. If it is wrong, then I'm not sure why it solved my issue as this was the only step I performed. Before doing this, I had been unable to open the file for several days.

I very much sympathize with ChristinaGB. I also have this problem and it's more than an inconvenience. I created some files with Pages on my iPad while on travel. They represent a lot of effort. When I move them to my desktop, I get the message. Updating OSX to Yosemite is not a trivial operation - it takes several hours to download on my not-modest internet connection. There are also other considerations to upgrading my OS version, which might require time for me to understand fully and plan for. And all of this is a prerequisite for updating iWork. Basically it would be most of a day's effort and commitment to an otherwise unusable internet connection for each machine I need to update, to get it to the point where I can view the files I created last week.

This is horrendous support for Pages and I will not soon forget it. Compounded by the elimination of rtfd output for Pages, this has been a hugely frustrating experience for me. I don't understand how they dare call it iWork - it's not working for me, and it's demanding a lot of my effort just to support it. It would be an entirely reasonable thing for them to supply a simple file conversion utility to make this transition to Yosemite and the new Pages format less painful. The lack of such a utility and the lack of any kind of support on these forums for an issue that is causing a complete work stoppage for me is evidence of Apple's disinterest in providing a professional level of support.

As soon as I can find a suitable replacement I will stop using iWork entirely.

I sometimes have the same issue.

However I intend to keep the old version of Pages which is light years more feature packed when compared to the new one!

Another way I found for at least seeing the contents of the old document is to do a get info on it.

You'll see it (the document) in the preview on that window.

You coluld then take a screen shot of that panel and re-insert it in pages as a png or pdf etc,

Overall that new Pages is a giant disappointment and my impression is Apple is not going to really upgrade the new version to the super features found in the old version.

I've completely removed the new version from my IMAC and I hope that will prevent the conflict in the future.

It was nice to have a few IOS features in the new one but that doesn't make up for all the core functions that have been removed in the new one.
