apple tv does not access iTunes - 4/17/2014
Apple TV (3rd generation)
I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.
Spoke too soon... getting the "The iTunes Store is currently Unavailable" message again. But so far the lagginess has not re-appeared. So possibly more signs of work in progress, and a fix in the near future.
Something is definitely going on, it's back again [for the moment] seems to pop in & out. [I'm testing by browsing and watching trailers right now inthe "top movies" section.] Once it popped out the previous time, I backed out and went to the "Trailers" section, which still worked, and then "Top Movies" started working again too. Not sure if that was a coincidence, or I kicked simething over the hill to get it going again. [I'll assume coincidence, and htat things are just coming back online slowly]
I can confirm mine is working great again. No stuttering and I can access rentals again.
Just tested by turning off Parental Controls and all seems back to normal!
Am located in Bangkok.
I can confirm my apple tv1 is back to normal as well. Can access itunes and no stuttering as well. Located in eastern Canada.
I guess I should add that I'm in Toronto/Canada. things are back up, but occasionally time-out with the store unavailable error, but trying again usually works on the first attempt. [at most I've had to do 3 retires]
Not a solution, but a workaround if, like me, you have synced content from a computer that you want to watch until Apple sorts out this mess: disable networking for the Apple TV. This turned out to be trickier than I thought, since the Apple TV doesn't provide an option to turn off wireless networking (that I could find), and it automatically switches to wireless if you have it configured for wired and then unplug the ethernet cable. I ended up blocking my Apple TV by its MAC address on my Airport Extreme wireless router, and when I rebooted my Apple TV, it was at least responsive and played back videos w/o issues. No iTunes or internet content obviously, but better than nothing.
Thanks again "Elkoth" for your efforts here. We might all still have been flapping around restoring our ATVs if it wasn't for this.
I think the jonnyrosen/macrumors.com advice affirms what has been said all along on this.
At the risk of taking a hostage to fortune I can say that my ATV1 is working fine again now, with the exception that the radio stations list is still missing, although the stations streams are working ok from a copied playlist. How related that is to the store problem I can't tell. I have logged it with Apple on the feedback page but it is not inconveniencing me.
Case closed.
It looks like ours is almost back to normal here in Portland. There are still some glitches and we get the error message "cannot connect to iTunes" sporadically, but MUCH better!

Thanks for your post, phantom. Not trying to overeact here, but on our fifth day of silence since the ATV's died, I don't think it's asking too much to expect SOME official communication on Apple's part (beyond "bread crumbs" of info gleaned from a few support operators).
I agree that something other than stony silence would be a good policy.
Temporary fix to watch local content.
Go to network settings and change the gateway IP to manual, use the same settings as DHCP except for the gateway. Here set it to something like 192.168.0.0 This tested ok,
Let's hope apple fixes this and it's not a ploy to force us to buy more hardware.
My AppleTV (Australia) seems to be back to normal as well.
HayfordfromCambridge: It's fixed! 🙂
frayzhe: It's sorted! 🙂 return your ATV to it's normal configuration and everything should start working again. [though you may still see a few hiccups as things come back online]
Ditto back on in Aus! Next time would be nice if Apple at least acknowledged the issue.
