Keyboard Shortcut for correct spellcheck

Hello everyone,
I am new to these forums and a new switcher from Windows/Linux. Just got my mac pro a week or so ago. One of the things I can not get used to is being unable to fix spelling mistakes without right clicking with the mouse. Is there a way to correct mistakes from the keyboard?

I suspect you're using an app such as TextEdit.
This suggestion will involve using TextEdit, if using a different app follow the same instructions.

There is no pre-set keyboard shortcut for the spelling command. You can set your own keyboard shortcut.

1. Open System Preferences and go to the Keyboard & Mouse Pref.
2. Click on the Keyboard Shortcuts tab
3. Click the plus icon towards the left corner out outside the box with keyboard shortcuts
4. A pop up will show. Choose your applications (i.e. TextEdit or Microsoft Word)
5. This part is critical. In the Menu Title field, type the text of the command in the menu bar, in your case type "Spelling". Yes there's three periods after it, but disregard putting them in this field.
6. In the Shortcut field, you will now choose the keyboard shortcut (easy to use the same one as you would in your previous applications). Hold down the modifer key (Command (Apple key), Option, Control or Shift). and pressing a letter on the keyboard still while holding the modifer key.
7. Click OK
8. Either launch or relaunch TextEdit. Right/Control click in the text space and see if your keyboard shortcut was added.

You're saying you would like a popup menu to show you suggestions.
I don't believe there is a way to customize this application to get that kind of feature.
If you want to be able to do it as in Windows, go pick up a copy of Microsoft Office for Mac. I'm sure this will be a feature in the Macintosh version of Word because it is almost identical to the Word 2003 application on Windows.
I have Word for Mac and I am able to do this. Pricey but really good.

Personally I would wait until Microsoft comes out with a Universal version of this application so you can see it fly on your Mac Pro. But there is no specific date, that I know of.

I bumped into this shortcut a few days ago. It seems to pull up the spellcheck window. However, what I would really like to do is be able to pull up the right click menu that comes up when the right click the underline, the menu that contains suggestions. In windows, this is easily done because the keyboard has a button that sends a right click.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I am looking at Spell Catcher X right now ... It's not clear to me from reading the site that it can correct spelling mistakes and apply spelling suggestions entirely through the keyboard. I do have office 2004 for Mac and I do not see how I can pull up the spelling suggestions through the keyboard.
