FaceTime help

I am using an old software version on my iPad and iPhone. I didn't want to do the update, because the graphics look so generic. Now my FaceTime doesn't work. Could it be due to the fact that I haven't done the update? I think Apple should let people decide if they want the update and not force someone to do it. I have heard so many negative comments on the update. I don't want to do the update and find out that my FaceTime still doesn't work. Thanks for any help!!
