There has been some doubt concerning whether it is at all possible to downgrade MAC OS-X to a lower version (e.g. 10.9 to 10.8) than the particular MAC was shipped with. Today I have proof that it is indeed possible to downgrade a Mac Mini "Core i7" manufactured in Week 19 (May), 2014 from the Mavericks it was supplied with to Mountain Lion.

Luckily I had already prepared a Mountain Lion ESD Installer on a USB thumb drive. I started with a brand new "Mavericks" Mac Mini and did not go through the set-up process, but connected it to my current generation "Mavericks" iMac via Thunderbolt in Target Mode. I then used Disk Utility (on the iMac) to security erase (writing zeros all over the HD) the Mac Mini's hard drive.

Next I connected the USB thumb drive containing Mountain Lion ESD installer to an older Mac Mini running "Snow Leopard". I also connected a MAC GUID formatted 2.5" hard drive (that did not contain any data) and I used RESTORE to move the Mountain Lion ESD installer over to the USB hard drive. (Source is the ML ESD installer and target is the USB hard drive.)

Next I moved the USB hard drive now containing the Mountain Lion installer over to the new 2014 Mac Mini and started this up while holding down the "C" key on the attached keyboard. This started the installer on the attached USB hard disk, and the installation process onto the Mac Mini hard drive could commence.

VOILA; the brand new "Mavericks" Mac Mini now has a successful installation of Mountain Lion. (The reason for this particular installation was to run certain legacy software that will only work up until 10.8 Mountain Lion).

So much for the myth that a MAC cannot be downgraded to any OS under the one that it was shipped with. However, in this case the current Mac Mini model was last upgraded Late 2012 and originally shipped with 10.8.1 Mountain Lion. It is less certain that the above method will work for any newer model that originally shipped with a later OS (e.g. Mavericks).
