Making DVD .dmg files - Permission denied?

I took a movie DVD, "Unforgiven," a Clint Eastwood film, and popped it into my iMac. I opened Disk Utility, selected "UNFORGIVEN 16X9REDO" in the side panel and clicked New Image. Everything went fine (took a while, though). I selected the newly made disk image, clicked Burn, inserted a blank DVD-R disk, and burned away. I decided to skip the last verification step, and then took it out and tested it. It didn't work in either the normal DVD player or the iMac DVD player (picture all blocky). I figured that I should have made a disk image out of the "4.2 MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846" icon, instead of the "UNFORGIVEN 16X9REDO" one.

So I tried to make a disk image out of it. I clicked the first DVD disk icon in the side panel and clicked New Image. I get a message:

Disk Utility Progress: Unable to create "disk1.dmg" - Permission denied.

So, now, for some reason, I can't make disk images out of double sided single layered DVDs. I tried Logan's Run, couldn't make a disk image. I tried a single-sided dual layered DVD, Narc, and got the same message!

What does this message mean? How do I start making disk images out of DVDs again? I've made 3 DVD disk images so far: Simpsons Season 8, disc 1, 2001: a space odyssey, and Unforgiven. Unforgiven is double-sided, while the other two are single-sided.

One last question: Is disk utility good for burning film DVDs? I managed to flawlessly burn a game CD with it. Was the DVD picture blocky because of me, or the SuperDrive? Any specific DVD handling app I should use?

thnx

Stan, with Commercial DVD's you cannot copy them like that.
Very few Commercial DVD don't have encryption and security on them, making it impossible to copy them without first using Mactheripper, or some other form of ripping software.
Next you will also need one of several different softwares to copy a commercial DVD to a standard 4.7gb DVD. The 2 that come to mind are Roxio's Toasat7 or Popcorn both have the compression software built in to fit them on a standard 4.7gb disc.
99% of all Commercial Movies have the built in encryption and security on them. You have to eliminate that encryption. There are several schools of thought on the legality of doing this even for personal back-up of your DVD collection.
The 2 Steps given above is the only way you can copy them.
It isn't the only software out there but it is in fact the easiest and most trouble free.
Oh one last thing, Always Verify them after the burn.

What's so important about "verifying"?
Thanks
