Some instruments greyed out in garageband

Hi guys , not used Garageband for a while . After downloading update and playing around for a while . I noticed that some of the instruments are greyed out ?

Is there a reason , ie, like they have to be purchased ?

Which update/upgrade did you install? If you upgraded to the newest GarageBand 10.0, only the most basic instruments and loops are directly available with the free upgrade. More instruments and Lopps require an in-up Purchase, see this document:

Expanding GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) content with an in-app purchase

GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) is available free on every new Mac and as a free download on the Mac App Store for all OS X Mavericks users. It comes with the full set of features and a great set of starter content including 50 Sounds, 500 Loops, 1 Drummer, and 2 Basic Lessons for Guitar and Piano. With a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99, you can expand this content to 200 sounds, 2,000 loops, 15 Drummers, and 40 guitar and piano Basic Lessons. You will also gain the ability to purchase additional Artist Lessons.

You can find this option by choosing Download More Sounds from the GarageBand menu. If you previously purchased this content, select Restore Purchase to install the content.

The previous, full GarageBand version '11 should still be available in a subfolder of Applications. And with this version still installed, you should be able to get the in-app purchase for free, by using the command "Restore Purchase" from the GarageBand application menu.

acccording to the " about " I have version 11 ( 6.0.5). I purchased the iMac April 2013 and downloaded free from the app store. Followed by an update , before having Apple store clean install Mavericks Jan this year . Hope that may answer or help about any greyed out ,vocals / instruments .

I must say this is totaly different to the version on the ipad where you got instruments to play with etc . .

Followed by an update , before having Apple store clean install Mavericks Jan this year .

The clean install of GarageBand will have erased most of your instruments and loops. GarageBand '11 will install in two stages: First the basic content, and when you click one of the missing, grayed out instruments, you should be prompted to download the additional content. I have no idea, if this additional content is still available for download, now that there is a newer version at the AppSTore, but try it.

Since you are running Mavericks, you have another option to get the missing instruments. Buy GarageBand 10.0 from the AppStore. It is free with Mavericks. And then use the "GarageBand > Restore Purchase" command to download the additional instruments. You can use both versions - the new GarageBand 10.0 and the previous GarageBand '11 concurrently. GarageBand 10.0 brings more smart instruments, like drummers and arpeggiators.

You will need GarageBand 10.0 anyway, if you want to open projects created withGarageBand 2.0 on an iPad in GarageBand on your Mac.

Just sooooo conffused now . As I had no GarageBand when it was OS X 10.8.3 and new , then later downloaded the version I have now " 11 " . I assumed it was the latest version , then as I said I had apple guys do a clean install of Mavericks and checking my backup and then they re-installed all of my programs . GarageBand included , however now that you have pointed out ( correct me ) that version 10. is the latest I am a tad lost . I assumed eleven 6.0.5 was when I downloaded on the 6-April- 2013 ?

Ok I went to purchases and clicked on download and it said , " not availeble for the UK " ? Strange as I downloaded from the app store and it shows in my purchased ?

Left it all alone and then , just went to play . When finishing it came up with something like " do you want to save it to iLife " I don't have iLife ?

Seems Mavericks install has , well I don't know , messed something up some where like other apps I've got . Should I contact support or is there something easy I am missing here ( apart from a brain . . lol ) I am Brand new to the mac system and not used the mac much because its a tad different to the pc way of things.

No wonder, you are confused by the version names.

  • GarageBand '11 is called '11, because it is part of the iLife '11 bundle (with iPhoto '11 and iMovie '11). The latest version number of GarageBand '11 is version 6.0.5, and it is compatible with your earlier OS X 10.8.3 and later.
  • The newest version, GarageBand 10.0 is only compatible with Mavericks, OS X 10.9 and later.

Mavericks has an auto update feature. If you do not change the System Preferences (in the AppStore) settings, it will automatically download and install all updates. You may want to change that to "install system data files and security updates", but not "install updates". This way you will be asked, if you want to install version updates.

" about " I have version 11 ( 6.0.5).

That is o.k., it is the best GarageBand version ever. You only need to get the missing instruments. Do you still have a backup of the old system from the time before the update to Mavericks? It is really a pity, that you wiped the system and made a clean install; that is usually unnecessary with a Mac, unless you are experiencing system wide problems.

The AppStore will usually not allow to download the older version, if a newer version is available. But try, if you can still update it. When you launch GarageBand '11 (6.0.5) and click a missing instrument, do you still get the prompt to download the update?

Hi leonie, have downloaded the new vversion and it is currently downloading an essential collection of sounds and loops. This should really mess with the head . . .lol. Just to confirm , you say both programes "11" and "10.2" will run on my iMac ?

Just noticed , reviews are really bad .

Should I wish to un install is it just a case of moving the icon to the trash , and will that get rid of all the files for that programme or will that mess up the other

(Garageband 11 ) ?

They will, be sure to keep both versions. The new version does not support everything the old version could, like for example vocal transformers or podcast tracks, so there are many disappointed users out there.

But you get automatic drummers and arpeggiators with the new version, and more control over the effects - that part of GarageBand now is more like Logic.

Should I wish to un install is it just a case of moving the icon to the trash , and will that get rid of all the files for that programme or will that mess up the other

Keep the new version - it does not need much space - the most space is needed for instruments and loops, and that you will want to keep installed to be used with GarageBand '11. If you uninstall GarageBand 10.0, you will not get any updates for the instruments. And as I said, you need the new version, if you want to use the Mac version of GarageBand to open songs created on your iPad. You will not be able to use Logic Remote on the iPad to remotely control GarageBand on the MAc.

But to answer your question - moving he icon to the trash will delete the application, but let the instruments installed.

Once GarageBand 10.0 is installed and all content downloaded, launch it and try the menu item "GarageBand > Restore Purchase". This should restore most of the missing GarageBand '11 content.

If it says, no content to restore, invest the $4,99 and use the command "GarageBand > Download More Sounds"

Wished I'd waited , because on starting Garageband , all went smooth. Got complete download and it's working fine . Just waiting for an Apple email to say it was a legit purchase .

Thanks for being there Leonie . Off to bed and relax , thank you ......

Hi leonie , help , since I updated , I went into imovie , expecting to use some of my made up Garageband files I made .

Have you shared your finished GarageBand songs, so they can be used in other applications?

You can either share the finished songs to iTunes or to the MediaBrowser. Both can be used in iMovie as a soundtrack, when you open the Media Browser.

Open one of your GargeBand projects and use the "Share" menu (in GarageBand 10.0):

  • Share > Song to iTunes; then you will see the song in iMovie in the iTunes section of the Media Browser
  • Share > Song to MediaBrowser; then you will see the song in iMovie in the GarageBand section of the Media Browser

Which iMovie version are you using?
