iPhone detected by iTunes but not Windows?

Earlier I was able to see my iPhone in My Computer (Windows 8) and browse the photos on it. However, since unplugging it and reconnecting the device the iPhone no longer pops up in My Computer, despite iTunes seeing and syncing with the phone just fine.

I've run through all the steps in this support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538

But still have the problem. I've powercycled the phone and my PC several times, made sure Apple Mobile Device Support is installed, stopped and restarted the AMDS, verified that the USB driver is there, verified both the phone's software and my version of iTunes are the most recent (and powercycled each after each update) but have had no luck getting the phone to appear in My Computer. Any help?

I found this before, see if this helps.

Found these steps posted elsewhere by another...

  1. 1. Go to Windows Control Panel.
  2. 2. Go to Hardware and Sound; Devices and Printers; Unspecified (look for Apple Mobile Device USB Driver)
  3. 3. Right-click, then select properties on the menu list.
  4. 4. Select the "Hardware" tab at the top. When the properties dialog box opens, once more select properties on the lower right hand button.
  5. 5. Under the "Driver" tab menu, the update driver button will be grey and unselectable here. So you need to select and click "Change Settings" button located near the lower left corner.
  6. 6. Now you can click the "Driver" tab menu near the top, so you can see the "Update Driver" button.
  7. 7. Select "Update Driver".
  8. 8. Select and click "Browse my computer for driver software".
  9. 9. For Windows 8.1 64 bit, it should be located in the folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
  10. 10. Click Next, and let the driver re-install.

Yes, this is helpful....very. I am an IT professional...went thru all the hoops on the web (update drives, uninstall iTunes...). I had updated my my OS to the new windows 10 feature pack that came out in 8/2016 Friday morning and noticed the new IOS update to 10 on Friday night. Try to do everything my users do before they do it. Found that it is a new feature in IOS 10 I guess, the phone can sync, but windows cannot access the photo storage unless the phone is unlocked. Thanks Apple for all the notice of this feature. I guess I expect that as they would like me to put my contents in the "iCloud".

Please close iTunes before doing any of this and if you aren't confident take it to your local IT repair shop and show them this 🙂

I'm an IT professional and had a client with the same problem, turned out i had it too personally, so I went home and looked everywhere and out of everyone on the internet, no one could give me the answer to this problem, where the iPhone would show in iTunes but not in windows 10 or viscera. with a strike of luck I've developed the answer 😉

this seems to be what worked for me on windows 10 SO that THE DEVICE SHOWS IN WINDOWS/THIS PC AND IN ITUNES 🙂. i started with having the apple mobile device driver in device manager. windows 10 right click start> device manager> universal serial bus controllers. from here unplug your iPhone then in device manager go to view SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES. right click apple mobile device driver> update >browse my computer for driver software >C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\APPLE\MOBILE DEVICE SUPPORT\DRIVERS into search for driver software in this location box> hit let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer>(should see a list of categories) find and select portable devices> click Mtp USB Driver (windows driver)> click next and windows will update the driver.

now plug your iPhone in and you should now see it installing drivers in the taskbar and your iPhone in windows and iTunes. (make sure your iPhone is unlocked)

IPhone 6s IOS 10.1 ITunes 12.5.1 and windows 10 latest feature update as of 21/10/16- Australia

Well, those are not the exact measures in the link you provided, but similar. If you are not getting it to work from there, the only other option is to remove iTunes and other Apple components and reinstall. You would need to do that by following this support document exactly, or else it won't work. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

One other point. If the photos in your Camera Roll have already been imported to the computer, you will not get the AutoPlay popup. Also, if you have a passcode on the phone, if the phone is not unlocked before you attempt to connect it to the computer it will not always allow you to get to the Import photo AutoPlay popup.

Good luck.

Thank you!!! This resolved my problem on Windows 7.

Here is the list of (very similar) steps for that OS:

I kept my iPhone connected all the time.

1. Close iTunes.

2. Open Device Manager.

3. Click on Universal Serial Bus controllers.

4. Click on Apple Mobile Device driver.

5. Update Driver software -> Browse my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer -> Portable devices> MTP USB Driver (windows driver)> Next

Now unlock your iPhone 6 & put in the access password. Enjoy the new found access via Windows Explorer!

You have a driver issue. Did you have the phone plugged in when you reinstalled iTunes? That might have corrupted the driver install since it seems your computer tried to install something after you removed all of the Apple software. You didn't mention to removed the software before, that is why I suggested it. You also did not indicate that you had plugged the phone into the computer. Also, the only folder you can browse on the computer with the phone connected is the DCIM folder and its subfolders, where photos are contained. There is no access to any other part of the file system on the iPhone, unless the device is jailbroken.

Okay, going to edit this into the OP if I can as well.

I uninstalled all Apple software as the guide directed. While the software was not on my PC at all (all drivers/programs removed) I plugged the iPhone in to charge while I downloaded iTunes. At this point my computer could see the iPhone fine. I could browse the folders and all that jazz.

"Great, now just to get iTunes back!" I think to myself. Well, now that iTunes is reinstalled it's doing the exact same thing: Showing up in iTunes but not in My Computer. Anyone know what could be causing such a strange occurrence?

I acted in accordance with the above steps.

but don't solve problem yet. I check this problem with 2 computer.

1- my PC with windows 10 x64

2- my laptop with windows 7 x64

Unfortunately, this windows can not connect the device to iTunes message. So I wasn't able to prepare a backup version of my device on the iTunes software. the iTunes has a Message that devices can not connect to the iTunes software.

also, my windows show unspecified for apple iPhone and apple mobile device USB driver.
