Apple TV Second gen connectivity problems (regularly crashes) watching Netflix on wifi, and am ready to give up on it. Any ideas?

I've had an Apple TV (Second Gen) for more than 2 years (is this the same as Apple TV 2 or no?). For some time now I get connectivity problems out of the blue watching Netflix (mostly use the box for Netflix; but sometimes for home sharing things on our iTunes view YouTube). Things will be working fine, then all of the sudden, connectivity drops, and it crashes while looking like it's buffering. Thought it was the wifi signal issue, b/c after a hard reset it will work fine .... almost every time. However, I have almost no issue using Netflix on my phone. And I had Comcast out here to check my wifi signal and connectivity .... yet it keeps happening. Also, I have updated the firmware on numerous occasions. It's not the end of the world to unplug, wait 30 seconds, and reboot ... but it's getting old doing it so regularly. I've thought about buying an ethernet cable to run it, but the computer's in the basement .... and besides, I don't really think it's the wifi (b/c it works on our other devices further away tahn the Apple TV). Whats up? Is it just another example of Apple making products that are made to be obsolete within 2 years? Any ideas or suggesions? I'm all ears. I'm about ready to scrap it and get a Roku, but would hate to give up Airplay and homesharing. Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Then unfortunately I think you will struggle to find the solution to your problem, as you are most likely looking in the wrong area.

I spend many hours reading about and testing things on the Apple TV, there are a couple of bugs I'm aware of, but when it comes down to networking the only bugs I see discussed are from a small minority who seem to have difficulty excepting the situation. Ask yourself this, if there is a bug, why does it not affect everyone using the same hardware with the same software.

If you have doubts, take your Apple TV and your mobile device to an Apple Store (or even a friends house), but the Apple Store would be a more controlled environment) and check it out.

This answer sounds kind of smug to me. It's the kind of answer that caused apple to fall out of favor with many consumers, myself included. I came back in the fold when I detected apple was reaching out to consumers and finally over that smug period. Edk5's post was put up on this board 6 or 7 hours ago and there's already 47 views. This does not seem like atv2 problems are that isolated. Believe me there are problems and they might not all be the same but the are similar in that the smooth experience we are looking for or once had, is no longer there. I hardly think dismissing them is helpful. Maybe there is no solution to this connectivity problem and maybe it's just a quirky, uncontrollable, inferior product. I've posted a problem elsewhere after going to the "genius" bar with no success. In a few days that board had over 100 views but no solution. Anyone have a meaningful answer to edk5's problem or mine? After the last update, I can no longer stream photos from my iMac or macmini if the the file is over 1000 photos. This is something I did every day since I bought the atv2 a few years ago.

There are millions of users, a bug would be impacting the majority of them. It is very rare that it is hardware related, and most cases have isolated the issue to be within the network.

Networking is a tricky thing and issues can come about at any time, and so proper troubleshooting needs to occur.

It's best to create a separate thread for the other issue.

Since the issue of this thread is deemed to be a network issue, why not also address my issue which was in another thread but did not get this amount of response. I have 2 atv2's, a macmini, and an older iMac. All operating systems and all software is up to date. Up until the last update to atv, I could stream photos to either atv from either computer. I like to randomly stream from the whole library while playing some classical music while having my am coffee. There are about 3000 photos on the mini and about 16000 on the iMac. Before the update, there wasn't a problem. After the update, either computer will stream a file with up to 900 or 1000 photos but it's a strain. Try to stream from a file larger and when the grayed out spaces fill in the atv crashes and restarts. Everything else streams fine: Netflix, rented movies, home movies of 45 minutes or so, music, other apps. I've been to the Genius Bar and had both refreshed. No changes. Any help?

I responded in another thread, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6099935, and have not had a third party respond. I did not start the thread but responded to someone who had the same problem. Maybe you or Winston could read this thread and explain if streaming photos and video ( from a hard drive or third party such as Netflix) are somehow use a different aspect of the atv2 chip. Thanks.

I'm sorry, but am I missing something here? (And, by the way, gsdoia, you're right; I think Winston Churchill does come off as a bit smug and not very friendly/helpful. Not what I was expecting; but some people are like that. Thanks for coming to my defense.)

But my question remains. What in my response makes it seem like a network issue? I should have clarified that I've moved twice in the past year-and-a-half, and the issue has been present at each location. I've changed my modem also. I haven't yet changed my router, and could try this too. However, as I said earlier, I get far fewer issues (almost none) on my iphone. Yet the "lost connection" issue with my Apple TV happens on a REGULAR basis, and has for some time .... at each of the different locations I've lived at (two different carriers between the 3 locations). How is this already determined by some to be a networking issue? I'm definitely more of a neophite when it comes to this stuff and trying to learn. So help me see what I'm missing here. That's why I asked, right? 🙂 Like I said, I could try connecting an ethernet cable, and try a newer modem (by the way, I moved it's location after the Comcast person was here and improved my signal - still having the issue though). Other than that, I don't know what else to do, and like I said, I'm frustrated enough to switch to another media box, although I loathe to do it.

Thanks for at least being kind gsdoia!
