DVD does not play on DVD player

Hi All,

I've so far had very little problems using i-DVD. But recentely, every so often, a DVD I burn does not play on my external Sony DVD player. I get a message on the player "C 13 60". This doesn't only happen to the same project but random projects. The DVD plays perfectly well on my Mac though!

Im using the same method I always use.

Any ideas why?

Thanks
Alps

Guys, slightly off topic...

Erm, I've subscribed to this topic but all the emails regarding this topic are being sent to my alternate email address, which I hardly ever log into. Is there anyway of making all subscribed post emails to come to my .Mac email address?

And, is there any way of permanently being logged onto Discussions?

Thanks
Alps

Hello Alps,
Regarding:

(1) I've subscribed to this topic but all the emails regarding this topic are being sent to my alternate email address, which I hardly ever log into. Is there anyway of making all subscribed post emails to come to my .Mac email address?
You've evidently entered your "alternate" email address as your primary in you original Apple account information. It isn't possible (for some crazy reason) to alter this info in your "My Settings" page for these fora (the Apple Support Discussion boards). So you'll have to go to your original account to make that change.

(2) And, is there any way of permanently being logged onto Discussions?
The simple answer is "no." For (very good) security reasons, Apple has set up these forums so that members must log in every time they want to take an active role (post questions or answers) in them.

Firstly I always burn disk on the "recommended"
option - don't know which speed that is (might be
X2?)

Alps,

The higher the burning speed, the more burn errors you are likely to create on your burned disc - computer players have a high-level of error correction and can ignore these errors - set top DVD players (in general) expect to see stamped commercial discs with low error rates and don't have the same level of error correction as computer players. Discs burned at higher burning speeds (say 4x and above) often can cause problems in some DVD players.

Unfortunately, iDVD doesn't give you many speed options when burning from it. However, Apple's Disk Utility DOES give you lots of choices. I ALWAYS recommend creating a disc image of your finished iDVD project out of iDVD. Verify the disc image plays the way you expect with Apple's DVD Player application and then use Disk Utility to burn the image to writable media.

I know it's an extra step or two, but it will help reduce the 'coasters' you burn because of project layout problems or write errors.

I just found out today that any dvds I create with
Memorex 16x DVD-R disks won't play in my dvd player
but do play on my Powerbook. I switched to Imation
8x DVD-R and they played fine in both. I
didn't change the burn speed in iDVD, just used the
recommended burn speed.

As I said earlier, iDVD doesn't give you many burn speed options and 'recommended' may not be optimum.

I strongly recommend creating a disc image out of iDVD and using Disk Utility to burn the disc image at a low rate (like 2x - certainly no faster than 4x).

Sorry, but I think you misunderstood my point. The difference was the type of DVD media I used. I wasn't successful with a 16x capable DVD disk but was successful with an 8x capable disk. The actual burn speed used for both was the same and I tried both an image and a direct burn. I should have known not to buy disks with capable speeds much faster than my Powerbook burner but apparently I grabbed those and they definitely don't work in my dvd player.

Hello Lauri,
Interesting, I started investigating "problems" encountered while trying to create my own DVD videos because my Panasonic PV-D4743 (a pricey model) wouldn't play my movies or those provided by a more experienced friend.

I'd bought the Panasonic player a couple years ago - when I had no idea I'd be making my own DVD videos. So it's my lack of info that lead me to this quandray. (I had this unit in for service: they found nothing wrong with it and it still plays commericially distributed DVDs very well.)

The more experienced friend was upset - he's been in the business of making wedding videos for some time and his clients were complaining because their wedding movies seemed to be "junk." They naturally blamed him - but he's scrupulous to a fault. So - I investigated and learned there are many DVD set top players which will not play homemade videos "properly" or at all.

The real problem for us: Most computer internal media drives DO play just about any kind of DVD. This means that "checking on the computer" with DVD Player is no gaurantee your videos will play on Uncle Ned's player, etc.
Nor is having the best quality blank DVD disks any gaurantee - although it too is a factor that must be considered. The matter of player "ability" is just another factor which has to be considered if we want to have the least problems with our home-produced DVD videos.

Addressing your issue: Memorex does not have a good reputation for it's DVD blanks. Verbatim is "upper class" but not the best. Taiyo Yuden (brand) seems to be the highest rated, has the best reviews overall.
