internal crack in display

My new macbook has a huge internal crack in the display which appeared after closing it to move from one room to another. I did not drop it nor did I bang it against anything. Has anybody else had this miserable experience

Normally a company shouldn't eat the cost of a user breaking their product, unless the user can show that it is a fault in manufacturing and not handling. You know, somethings things get damaged in shipping or before the user touches them, to the point where they are more easily broken when the users gets them.

It is hard to prove that the user did not mishandle obviously, but Apple just might take their word for it. Ideally you'd want to go back ASAP to the same place you purchased it and persist. Be honest and open about the quality of the product you recieved. The sooner you take it back the better.

As a matter of fact it did break by itself. The computer was in no way, repeat, in no way mishandled. Not once, not ever.
One moment it was perfect then I closed it to carry to another room. When I opened it two minutes later half of the display was white with a black crack appearing behind the screen. I realize that it will be hard to convince the people at apple, but it's the truth. There is not a scratch on the laptop nor on the screen

I have handled and repaired literally thousands of notebook computers over the last 12 years. I never once broke a display, even with "less than delicate" handling. This is not a common occurance, nor was your display built any differently than the thousands of other Macbook customers that have not cracked their displays.
Sorry, there is something missing here. Maybe you didn't break it, maybe there was another "force" involved, but it DID NOT break on it's own. You did not simply carry it to another room and find it broken. No way. Good luck with that though, it its a very tough story to believe.

I'm gonna have to disagree with that. Granted, the display cannot "break itsself", but many forces are acting on the display at all times, even when the computer is not moving. There is no doubt in my mind that an LCD could be defectively weak and unable to stand up to the heat of the laptop or normal pressure of closing the lid.

The fact that you handled "thousands" of laptops doesn't mean much. When you can provide legitimate information about his specific case, then we will take you seriously. A good technician knows that you learn something new every day.

How about the original poster providing "legitimate information about his specific case" - like maybe with pictures or something?

I realize that people have problems arise and that sometimes the problems aren't their fault; however, I do find it curious that it always seems to be people with one or two posts talking up the strangest problems or weirdest Macbook behaviors. Even more curious is that they always seem to be followed up by a "hey! I had (have) that exact problem, too!" from someone with only a few posts as well.

Again, things happen... Perhaps you remember the series of threads posted a month or two ago in which the posters quite proudly and immaturely admitted to making up a huge number of problems and posting about them (from school - a high school computer lab - a group of friends) just for kicks.

School's back in session people.

If you do a quick google search on 'cracked macbook display', you'll find many forums with users who have had this exact problem. For example:

Here's my 2cents.

Had the macbook for 3 months now, and I LOVE it.... But I was carrying it upside down yesterday and felt an ominous crack. When I opened it there was a hairline fracture which has grown considerably since. There is no evidence of physical damage on this unit. I keep it in a case whenever I carry it. There are no dents, dings or scratches of any kind on it. This computer is my baby. I am an electrical engineer, and am trained in dealing with technology; I have at least 3 different laptops in my house and 2 desktops. I have never ever had an issue with a cracked screen up until now.

When I took it to the Apple store the "Genius" was very rude even after I explained the situation and basically called me a liar. When I asked to speak to the manager she did not budge one inch, and basically just listened to my complaint and regurgitated what the other guy had said. There are plenty of other forums, even on the Apple website, that deal with this same complaint. I plan to call apple customer support later today and in addition to explaining my situation, file a complaint against the manager and "Genius", who were basically laughing at my misfortune. If this does not work out, I plan to file a complaint to the Massachusetts comsumer authorities under the lemon law. There is no way a company should be able to sell a product for this much money with a defect that costs this much to fix.
