Playing Starcraft 2

Hey folks,

I just want fellow Mac users' opinions on the following matter.

I have the late-2013 iMac 27 inch (base 27 inch) -- graphics: NVIDIA GeFroce GT 755M Graphics processor with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory.

I also have the late-2012 Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch -- I am uncertain of the graphics... but perhaps: Intel HD Graphics 4000.

I also have the curret model mid-2013 Macbook Air 11 inch -- graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5000.

For the latter two (the notebooks), I can use external monitor with it to play SCII -- so screen size won't be an issue.

I am just curious what you guys' think would be the most optimal one to play SCII with?

Which would have least heating?

Game performace is important, but I don't care too much to have it on highest in-game graphics settings...

I don't know much about graphics and its related aspects... so I am reaching out for any feedback/information.

Thanks for your feedback!

The machine with the dedicated GPU (i.e. the iMac) will *smoke* the other two machines, which do not have discrete graphics. I have a 2014 13" Retina with "Iris" graphics... the performance is rather poor compared to my 2012 Retina 15", which has a discrete nVidia 650 GPU.

Integrated GPUs are improving, but they cannot hold a candle to discrete GPUs - even ones that are several years old..

Thanks for the reply.

I understand very well.

But I do see people on the web (including youtube) reporting good enough play with even intel HD 4000 (which is the one on my retina 13).

Anyways, if you play for a prlonged session, the high heating and high fan speeds are expected... on any of the three machines I have. I am curious to which one would have the "least" stress while gamining?

Also, could running it in this "stressed" condition for prolonged time adversely affect the longevity of our macs?

Thanks again!

You asked which machine would perform the best. That is the question I answered.

I've played SC2 on a non-retina 13" MBP with HD4000 graphics. It ran fine with mostly-medium and some low graphics settings. The SC2 preferences tell you which options tax the CPU, and which ones tax the GPU.

I can't say exactly how things will run for you because playing Starcraft at Retina resolutions with an integrated GPU will result in lower performance than my tests at non-retina, 13" resolution (i.e. 1280x800).

If you are *really* asking which of your machines will play SC2 in an enjoyable manner, then they all will, although it's a matter of personal preference.

You're going to get some serious fan noise and heat on all three of your machines. The iMac will probably "handle" it the best, but your other computers will be fine, too. I used to have an old 13" MBP that essentially did nothing but render from 2008 and it only recently started having problems.

I see... Thanks a lot for your info and input!

It is much appreciated.

Just the downside to the iMac is that it is a 1TB traditional spinning hard disk. Which may or may not affect the "performance" a great deal...

But I also don't want, in the long run, to tax the machine so much by overheating that it gets slower and slower for other tasks... you know?

I thank you again for all your help!

SSD won't give you much, if any, of a performance boost for SC2. As far as "taxing" the machine goes... dude, don't worry about it! Folks who get on and play around in Aperture tax their CPUs/GPUs just as much!

You can play SC2 every day all day without worry. The reason your computers have that much horsepower is so it can be leveraged! If your fears about needing to "baby" your machines (which I totally understand) prevent you from using your nicest Mac to play games, then go ahead and play on the weaker Macs.

lol. You reason well.

I think I will go ahead with the iMac to play... as it already has a big screen... whereas the others, I have to plug in an external, which could be annoying.

Again, thanks for helping me reason through...

And yes, I have a tendency to "baby" it... partly because of my ignorance with computers... it has appeared from my past experiences that playing a lot of computer games have slowed down my computers... PCs that is. haha

Anyways, thanks man.
