Why does my Macbook pro print really bad compared to my Windows laptop? Canon Mg6350

Hi my Macbook pro prints photos really bad compared to my Windows laptop could someone please explain why? I have tried using different colour profiles but it still doesn't look as good. It looks very sharp from the Windows laptop just using the default settings on there. The printouts from the Macbook pro looks muddy and not defined. The printer is a Canon MG6350 and I use this to print from both Macbook and WIndows laptop. The iPad and iPhone also print badly. Surely I shouldn't have to send all my photos to my WIndows laptop to print them after edits in aperture etc.?

Hi Melophage thanks for the reply,

Yes the canon printer driver is up to date Dec 2013. The upgrade was all installed as well and my OS X is mavericks. Should a default printout from a Windows laptop look different to a default from a mac? Maybe I need to find out the colour profile on the Windows laptop and set the Macbook to that colour profile as well? But I'm unsure how to do this? The mac printout looks airbrushed even when I haven't done any editing.

Bazoioi,

I’ve never owned a Canon printer, so I don’t know how much effort they put into making their drivers produce equally good output from both Windows and OS X. It looks like they rely upon a CUPS printer driver for OS X, which suggests that OS X might get shorter shrift. Do they produce colour profiles which work only on Windows computers? It might be worth asking Canon themselves if they produce colour profiles specifically for Macs for this model printer.

Was it a photo? Were the finer face details the same?

Canon have told me the following:

Further to your enquiry regarding your PIXMA MG6350, we suspect that the issue might be caused by the application that you are using for printing your photographs.

We suggest to try using the Canon software for testing purpose. Please find the download for the Canon photo printing software in the link below:

Hi I have tried to use the image garden and the results are still the same. The windows laptop printing on default looks much sharper and clearer. More defined. The Macbook pro printing through image garden looks airbrushed just as it did through other applications. Please help.

Thanks

Thank you for your reply. We are sorry to read that the photo quality did not improve when printing from My Image Garden.

When you print using genuine Canon inks and paper and print using Canon software, the correct profiles should be used. If this is confirmed, we recommend to check the driver version.

Open printers and scanners in system preferences, highlight the MG6300 series printer and select options and supplies. The driver version should be 10.84.2.0. If this is not the driver version listed, close options and supplies, highlight the printer and click the -. Click the + to add the MG6300 series printer and confirm that “print using” shows the Canon MG6300 series. When the printer is added, try again to print from My Image Garden.

If you are printing from another application using non Canon paper, it is possible that the problem is with double profiling. In this case, we recommend to use the paper profile supplied by the paper manufacturer. We also recommend to disable Canon color management from the application that you wish to print from. You will need to contact the software manufacturer for instructions to allow the software to manage the colors.

Please contact us again should you have other enquiries.

I’m using canon genuine paper and inks. I have the driver version 10.84.2.0. The windows laptop prints great. Details are in the faces. The macbook pro prints bad there are no details in the faces it looks airbrushed. My image garden doesn’t double profile as it tells me to select default when the print prompt appears and I’ve done this. And my image garden gave exactly the same results - windows laptop good image, macbook pro bad image. Can you please help me?

Thanks

We would like you to install the software from the following web link and use this application to print your images.

If the quality does not improve, we recommend that you contact Apple and explain to them the issue that you are having as there may be some settings that need to be adjusted in your operating system to accomodate the print quality.

Please let us know the outcome.

So they've basically sent me back here to apple to find out if they're some settings that need to be adjusted? Anyone else find that Windows prints better than OS X?

Always nice when one company tries to blame the other, isn't it.

I use Adobe CC on both Mac and Windows (7 Pro 64-bit). I can't tell the slightest bit of differences between printing from either platform. Even using high-res Photoshop prints down to my lowliest Word document I'm sure that the problem you have must lay in the drivers but it seems that Canon won't make that admission and are foisting the problem back to Apple (and, were the problem, reversed, would likely foist the problem back on Microsoft).

There's obviously a problem with the OS X driver - but I wouldn't know who to contact at Apple that would even make suggestions that the issues with the problem may be Apple's. If I were you, I guess that I would simply only print from Windows (I can't imagine the pain that would cause, but I know of no other 'fix').

Sorry,

Clinton

There's got to be a difference in settings somewhere. Canon printers are used by many designers and photographers on Macs and they seem happy with the combination.

If the problem was happening to me, not only would I reinstall the drivr but I would try to delete all printer settings files before the reinstall. And another possible step would be to reset the OS X printing system...sometimes nothing else will do.
