I'm trying to run autocad lt 2014 for Mac and Adobe creative cloud at the same time using Mavericks. When I try this, the system freezes.

We are a small business running Autocad lt 2014 for Mac and Adobe InDesign Creative Cloud. We are running Mavericks on mac mini machines (maxed out ram to 16). We are not able to run these two pieces of software simultaneously without the computer freezing up. To remedy the situation I have to do a hard restart and can only run either autocad or InDesign at the same time. Also if we try to launch Autocad from the application, we freeze the system as well (spinning multicolor wheel). However, if we double click on a drawing file (.dwg) the software opens fine and we're able to work on it. Any thoughts? Is this an OS problem, an Autodesk problem, or perhaps a Creative Cloud issue?

Okay,

Good!

Do have any another apps open in the background while you are trying to launch both AutoCad and InDesign?

I can't figure out why either one crashes if you try to open them both.

What year is your Mac Mini?

The only thing I can think of the maybe causing the crash is that the Mac Mini uses an integrated (shared) GPU and the VRAM for the GPU comes fron the total RAM that you have installed.

Both applications are very resource intense apps and both need RAM to run and enough GPU power for the graphics engine.

It maybe you simply do not have enough RAM to run two CPU, GPU and RAM intensive applications with 16 GBs of RAM.

Mavericks, will take whatever RAM it needs(at least 4 GBs of RAM) , both applications will need their RAM and the GPU will take whatever is left in installed RAM and allocate it for whatever VRAM it needs for these running applications AND the OS.

I am thinking you maybe short on available RAM.

This is what happens with the Mac Mini not having a dedicated GPU with its own bulit-in VRAM.

In a Mini, it has to steal RAM for the GPU from the total of installed physical RAM in your Mac.

Thanks for all the expert advise. I'll try and see if I can work through a few things. The MacMini is only about 4 months old and I've maxed out the ram as high as it will allow.

My assumption is that it is a CC issue because I have other MacMinis (that are slightly older), with the same amount of RAM, Running the same OS and Autocad, but they are running InDesign CS5. I have no problems with those machines at all. Could it be possible that CC is much more of a RAM hog than CS5?
