Frankcast48,

your latest EtreCheck report shows that you still have a non-zero Page-outs, so you’re still going to experience slowdown problems at some point until that gets resolved. There is still one BlackBerry kernel extension active, and two which could be loaded, and the BBDaemon launch daemon is still shown; you might need to restart your MacBook Pro and run EtreCheck then to make sure that the BlackBerry software doesn’t reäppear after powering up.

May 2, 2014 1:10 PM in response to Frankcast48

Frankcast48,

it looks like you’re going to need the follow the advice which was given on the BlackBerry forum discussion which you’d found, and manually remove the folder containing the BlackBerry software using the rm command.

The loaded BlackBerry kernel extension can be unloaded with this command:

sudo kextunload com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt

Once it’s been unloaded, perhaps that BlackBerry forum discussion’s rm command will remove the corresponding kernel extension files.

May 6, 2014 11:35 AM in response to Melophage

Hi Melophage,

I did the command you indicated and this is what I got:

Fs-MacBook-Pro:~ c$ sudo kextunload com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt

Password:

Can't create com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt.

Fs-MacBook-Pro:~ c$

Maybe I did something wrong. Remember I am not an expert.

I found anothe forum with another procedure which at least seem to have succeeded in removing BBLaunchAgent and BBDaemon:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=11171082&postcount=16

In order to move to trash both files I had to quit the process in the Activity Monitor.

After restarting this is EtreCheck I got:

May 6, 2014 3:58 PM in response to Frankcast48

Frankcast48,

that was my mistake — I forgot to include a parameter in that command. Try this instead:

sudo kextunload -b com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt

If this command does unload this kernel extension, try looking around for files with names which include “com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt” and
“com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverVSP” in them, in either the system’s /Library/Extensions folder (with a leading slash) or your user’s Library/Extensions folder (relative to your home folder, without a leading slash). If you find these kernel extension files, use the rm command (“rm” stands for “remove“) to delete them, and then try rebooting and running EtreCheck again, to see if they’re still being loaded somehow.

Frankcast48,

good, you were able to unload the kernel extension. Were you able to find the kernel extension files for those two BlackBerry USB drivers and delete those? Your report above shows that they’re still detected, even though they’re not currently loaded. If you haven’t deleted those kernel extension files yet, then at least one of them will probably be reloaded the next time that you restart.

May 6, 2014 6:03 PM in response to Frankcast48

Frankcast48,

I only have one non-Apple kernel extension on my MacBook Pro, and it’s located down in the depths of one of the app folders under the /Applications folder. The Apple extensions on my Mac can be found under /Library/Extensions, /System/Library/Extensions, /System/Library/Filesystems, and /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks. I don’t know if BlackBerry would attempt to install its own kernel extensions under any of these folder hierarchies. Do you still have a BlackBerry-related app installed, so that perhaps your two BlackBerry USB kernel extensions might be somewhere under the /Applications folder?

May 6, 2014 6:44 PM in response to Melophage

Melophage,

You were right the kernel extension: com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt

loaded back on. I did a complete search of all com.rim files and foud a few hidden in different places, but most were documents. I moved to trash all of them just in case.

I have been able to find the extensions folder in Library. I reviewd each and every folder in Library and found a couple of more files com.rim.

But I don't seem to find anywhere the kernel extension we are looking for.

Another issue I noticed is that in the EtreCheck report there is a start up item named Cisco VPN, which I don't use any longer. Can I simply throw to the trash all files related to the CIscoVPN?

Thanks again.

I really want to thank you for all your patience. I have finally really find my Mac running at top speed again. I eliminated the last two login items I had, plus did a Repair Permissions and verified disk. Everything seems to be running now.

I still have that kernel extension re: BB. since I found a couple of BB Rim related extensions in the Systems Library folder (RIMBBUSB.kext and RIMBBVSP.kext), I would appreciate your input on to get rid of them (drag them to the trash?) and the CiscoVPN which I don't use anymore (same solution? Drag to the trash?).

Finally, I notice I have several version of AdobePDFViewer, is that a problem?

Again, you have a tremendous help for someone like me who is not an expert and I really appreciate it.

May 7, 2014 8:58 AM in response to Frankcast48

Frankcast48,

congratulations on getting your page-outs to zero bytes!

Regarding the Cisco startup item, you should use whatever method Cisco provides to uninstall its software. (Perhaps its installer includes an uninstaller?)

Before removing the RIMBBUSB.kext and RIMBBVSP.kext kernel extension files, you should first run the kextunload program as you did previously to unload the one BlackBerry kernel extension which is currently loaded. After that, to remove the extension files via Terminal, you should give the “sudo rm -f files” command rather than “rm files” to force the removal. Be sure that you’re providing the correct filenames for deletion to that command — it won’t ask for confirmation!

Your AdobePDFViewer plugin is different from your AdobePDFViewerNPAPI plugin — they’re used by different browsers.

Apparently you’ll still need to look for the most recent EPSON software for your printer, since your Low Ink Reminder is failing to run.

Your Silverlight plug-in is out of date; the most recent version (5.1.30317.0) can be downloaded from here.

May 7, 2014 3:29 PM in response to Melophage

Melophage,

Hapinness did not last long. Mac is running slow again. I was not able to remove the kext with the Terminal procedure:

Last login: Wed May 7 00:24:57 on console

Fs-MacBook-Pro:~ c$ sudo kextunload -b com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt

Password:

Fs-MacBook-Pro:~ c$ sudo rm -f RIMBBVSP.kext

Password:

Fs-MacBook-Pro:~ c$ sudo rm -f RIMBBUSB.kext

Password:

Fs-MacBook-Pro:~ c$

The extensions continue there even after rebooting.

EtreCheck report continues to show the page-out and in a previous report with other apps open was even higher, but I did not save it by error:

I ran EtreCheck about 3 times before this one and got higher Page-outs (69 MB, 149 MB and 158 MB), but it seems to be stabilized now around the figure you see now (max 31 MB). Sometimes I open too many apps at the same time, so maybe I have to increase my RAM to 8 GB.

Thanks a lot for all your assistance.
