apple id changed can't log out of old apple id

I changed my apple id (there was no instructions to do anything else) and now I can't log out of my old id on my iPhone or my iPad to log into the new id.

Searching through instructions, it says you have to log out first of all your devices - wouldn't that be good advice to give at the point of change and not have to dig through endless instructions? There are no instructions how to sign out of your other devices once your change your apple id on one device. That's not very consumer friendly.

iPhone 5, iOS 7.1

The old password did not work on the old appleid.

So, I took a sledgehammer where a simple tool should have done the trick.

Luckily, I have my own website and could create the old email again so I could get it verified (when I changed the appleid back to the original so I could sign out of all of my devices). I then verified this old email/appleid, signed out of all devices successfully and then changed the appleid to the new id again.

I have used my apple ID since it was introduced in the 90's and after so many years, I needed to delete that old email because I had 100 spam emails per hour on it.

The point I was trying to make was that Apple should 1) program an appleid change so that on other devices you can log into the new one without signing out of the old one (that no longer exists) and 2) before they allow you to change your appleid instruct you to sign out of all devices before proceeding. Having to find instructions for this after the fact is silly and sometimes people can't recreate a deleted email account. I was lucky.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully, others will be able to look at your list and make it happen.

Yes it would. Due to the number of iCloud services that will be affected, changing your Apple ID isn't trivial and can be a royal pain if you don't do everything right.

Apple doesn't help when they chose the words Delete Account because doing so doesn't actually delete your iCloud account (which can't be done on your own anyway) - it merely deletes that account from the device. The data stored in iCloud remain unchanged.

I don't recommend changing an Apple ID as well as changing its password concurrently because that can become very confusing. Change one of them, and verify the change is effective and there are no surprises prior to changing the other.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
