metric print scale

I have iPhoto6. I have a picture that I wanted at 13x5cm, so I selected 'constrain - custom' and defined 5.11x3.15 inches in iPhoto and then selected Done. I then went to print from iPhoto and it only allows me certain print sizes (3x5inches, 4x6 etc), so my saved images will not print at the size that I need them.

If I then open the image in Preview, this shows the display at some other size than the one saved in iPhoto and it will not let me define a print size.

Even from the Advanced option on the print menu, there is no way to control printing size better. Madness.

This is extremely frustrating and certainly makes me think sometimes why I bought an Apple.

iPhoto is a basic consumer photo library application not a high powered photo editior. After all if you go to Tesco or Boots to have photos printed the default size will be 6x4 inches rather than 10.2x15.3 cms. Even in the UK we still work in imperial meaurements. (Quite why when it's illegal to buy a pint of milk or a lb of carrots but I won't go there...) In iPhoto Apple is catering for the majority of consumers.

If you regularly need a little more control than iPhoto offers then you could look at a consumer level photo editor. I use Adobe Photoshop Elements (around £45) (I'm on vers 2 but vers 4 is out now). It provides a cut down but significantly cheaper version of Photoshop and allows exact control of image and canvas sizes as well as a huge number of other features.

kind regards
