How does one generate a UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier) in AppleScript?

AppleScript can't generate UUID's directly, but you can use "do shell script" to invoke the command line utility.

set myUUID to do shell script "uuidgen"
</pre>

You could use the unix command uuidgen.

set myUUID to do shell script "uuidgen"
display dialog myUUID
