MBP or MP?

So i've convinced my parents i need a new computer for uni and the choice is now between the MacPro & the MBP. Chances are when i'm ready to buy, the merom MBP would be out.

Now i'd get the MBP but i already have PowerBook which has a lot of life left in it its less than 6 months old plus it works now so why should i replace it only to possibly get a bad machine. As it stands, the portable lineup isn't particularly stable right now. I also feel selling my PB would be a waste, as i would get little or no value for it.

Also the Core 2 Duo machines, i feel, will be hotter and may even have more issues than current versions and the true power of the core 2 machines won't be harnessed till the santa rosa chipset is out. So i'm leaning towards moving away from intel portables for a while and heading for the desktops which are significantly more "stable"

The iMac or mini are out of the question, i need a separate display and i need power/expandability (i intend to keep my machine for a long time) both of which the mini and imac cant offer. This leaves me with the MacPro.

Sounds like i've my decision right...well...no. Up till now i was a very mobile person, as soon as people get too noisy, i move to another spot in the house. If i get a MacPro this won't be the possible. Then again 70-80& of the time people aren't noisy and i tend to sit at my desk with the PB docked mostly, which means, the MacPro is still a good candidate.

To be honest the MacPro would be more long lasting and wont require an update just upgrades till at least 2009 but with the MBP i'd need to replace it at least every year which isnt really budget wise but it would allow me freedom when i need it but the PB can also provide that. Sigh...i am soooooo confused. Help!

PS i'd be using this computer to run Photoshop, FCP, iLife, Windows (some games), scientific imaging software (from school), Logic/Garageband, word processing/presentation creations and of course surfing the web.

User uploaded fileIf you went with a Mac Pro would the use of your PowerBook hamper you in any way when you need to be portable? If the PowerBook is enough for when you do actually need to be out and about then the Mac Pro will perform far better than any MacBook Pro you could buy.

What you give away for the luxury of portability is quite substantial.

I'm personally going with a 2 computer system as I need "a computer" (that runs Windows) when I'm about rather than "my computer" if you understand the distinction. For now, my PowerBook will do just fine until I give it to my mother as this year's Christmas present. I'll probably buy a 15" MBP as the MB's GMA950 just doesn't cut the mustard for Aperture.

User uploaded fileLet me throw in a vote for the MacBook. I have a fully loaded BlackBook, 20" iMac and heavily loaded MacPro w/a delivery date of 9/26.

Despite the complaints you may read in the MacBook forums, my BlackBook is amazing. I've never had a problem with it and it runs nearly 24/7. It is my main work computer and I carry it on all medical rounds, to lunch, to house-calls and use it for a great many tasks and needs. WiFi, Ethernet and dialup are all excellent. There is no heat issue whatsoever. When that fear first came up I took it right into an authorized Apple dealer and had them check it out. When I came back at the end of the day I could tell the tech guy thought I was a little looney. He showed me all of his tests using third party heat testing equipment as well as software results and said it was clearly within the normal heat range, perhaps a little cooler.

Now I've owned very expensive (top of the line) ThinkPads (three of them), Dells, Toshibas and Sony machines and I spent far too much time trying to get each one of those machines to run consistently. I could never get them to run as well as my BlackBook does today.

I do everything on the BlackBook. Final Cut Express is installed and I convert or caputre digital video to a variety of other formats (DVD, AVI, MPEG, MP4, etc). I connect: HP ColorLaserJet printer, LaCie 600Gig external drive, LaCie Slim DVDRW/CDRW, and EyeTV. In each case they plug in and just plain work. NEVER had that kind of luck with a non-Mac machine.

When I go to bed the BlackBook is 'online' and downloading all kinds of information and files. To carry it I had a special black soft canvas backpack and black flannel sleve made to carry it in. No matter where I go with the BlackBook people ask me about.

Hope this helps!

The only reason I could see you wanting a MBP is if you need you use Windows software in class or away from home base. Otherwise MP seems the obvious choice.

That said recent PBs still fetch decent money on eBay. You might consider trying to sell it and then get a MB with the proceeds. It would probably be an even swap. MB + MP sounds like a nice combo to me.

How about a laptop (either the one you have now, or a MacBook Pro) and a large display for your room. You could use an Airport Express for network, printer, and audio out, and BlueTooth for an external keyboard and mouse. You would just have to unplug the DVI port when you are driven from your room. If you later decide on a Mac Pro, you could use the display with it.

OK that makes some sense. I'm about to get a Mac Pro to run some PC only CAD and 3D modelling apps. I guess a lot of it depends on how big a display you can get. I kind of think that if you are getting the 20" Cinema Display, then you could just as easily make do with the 15" or 17" MBP. My current problem is working out how to afford the Mac Pro and a 23" Cinema Display!
