format - bold, italics, underline - text in iOS

When composing in Messages and Mail on an iPhone 4s w/iOS 7.1.1 we're supposed to be able to format text by selecting (holding or double clicking) a word and then choosing the "B i u" option from the bar that appears over the screen. Another option offered is Insert Image. For the longest time I wasn't aware these were, in fact, available simply because they hadn't appearer. All I ever saw was Cut, Copy, Paste, Replace and Define. But every once in a great while, one of those will show up, to my surprise. My question is why are those two features intermittent? And is there any way to access them consistently?

- thanks

This issue seems to occur (for me) any time I'm composing text in iOS - whether in Messages, Mail, Notes, Contacts, Twitter… If I'm writing something on the phone that allows me to select and highlight some of the text that black bar appears, offering different options (it seems 3 are initially displayed, with an arrow at one end of the bar that, when pressed, will show more). My understanding is one of those options should be to manipulate the format of that text - adding bold, italics or underline.

I've seen that particular option block just a couple times in the hundreds of times I've used the feature. And I have no idea why it appeared on those occasions. But I'd like to be able to access it all the time. Likewise the Insert Image. Same deal; shows up very infrequently, though it's listed as one of the standard features in recent iOS information. Maybe someone knows how this actually works?

I took the image below from Apple's Web site, describing the features of iOS. It says "Format text in Mail". You can see the block I'm referring to - the BIU - on the options bar within a message being created in Mail. The instructions below say you can tap any word to bring up the options menu, and select this option to bold, italicize or underline your text. I think that's pretty clear. Now, why isn't it showing up for me.

I'm curious; do you, Meg St._Clair or FoxFifth or anyone reading this see that BIU panel on the options bar when you highlight text? Am I the only one who doesn't have regular access to this feature? Or am I just the only person who minds that it doesn't work?

But not in other iOS apps that allow the user to compose text? Like Notes? Do they not permit formatted text?

Thanks for the reply.

Notes doesn't support formatted text. Of the apps I use, Evernote does support formatted text but it has a menu type bar for doing the formatting. For mail, I use the Gmail app and it does support tormatted text and it does use the BIU popup menu when you highlight the text -- same as the standard email app as you show in the picture.

Alex,

Think I figured this out. It's been driving me nuts for weeks now.

When you click or hold and the format block pops up, the right arrow doesn't do squat except exit the format block...

Try swiping the block to the left. For me it reveals the bold, italics & insert pic/vid.

Hope this helps. And hope they're fixing it with the next update!

This simply isn't true. I have the exact same situation as Alex Machi – I mean exact same situation. In Message, the b/i/u has come up a few times, but for no apparent reason. Then it doesn't come back again for a long time, and never when I actually need it.

This is clearly an option on my iPhone 6+, OS 8.4, but I had the same problem going back to when I got 4S, so it was clearly an option on that phone, and I would dare say any phones in between.

I get the same black bar that everyone else gets. And as such, there is never an arrow on the right side, so suggestions to click on the arrow is of no assistance, as there isn't an arrow.

Cut | Copy | Paste | Replace... | Define

Like Alex, I have YET to find any person who has accurately answered this question. Is there anyone who has found a solution or answer to this?

All you have to do is to put the text that you have to see as bold *inside asterisks* while typing, the phrase you need to italicise _between underscores_, and words you want to strike through ~between tildes~.

If you want to make a text appear in bold + italics, you can type the text _*between their respective symbols*_. Similarly, to combine all three you can type the text ~_*inside all three respective symbols*_~.

Hope this helped!
