50i and 25p conversion

Hi there,

I'd be grateful if anyone could help me with this.

I have some AVCHD footage here that is half 50i 50 fps and half 25p 50 fps (when i realsied what i'd done I switched it back to the later)

NOW, how can i get this footage all ready to work with in one timeline?

I'd usually convert all my MTS files to pro res via brosoft software and pop into FCP - no problem.

Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

The easiest solution, unless you have a specific reason otherwise, would be to edit all the footage on a 50i timeline. Both the interlaced and progressive footage will work without impacting the image quality. This is not the case if you try and edit on a 50p timeline, as FCP will attempt to deinterlace the 50i footage and not do a very good job of it.

Once you have completed the edit, you can export a Self Contained QuickTime of the timeline and take that into Compressor and make the deliverables you need.

Same as always. I'm not familiar with Borosoft, but you want to pass the original frame size, & framerate while converting the codec to ProRes.

The source 50i clips should be converted with upper field dominance, the 50p should have no field dominance.

(Not to confuse things but the 50i footage could be ingested directly in FCP via Log and Transfer, but if you are used to using a 3d party convertor, you might as well continue using it.)

Once you have your source files converted, create a new (empty) sequence and edit or place one of the 50i clips on the timeline. You should be prompted to match the sequence settings to the source. Say yes and you are good to go.

The one thing you must understand if you use a 3rd Party method to convert the files to a fcp friendly format is that if your media drive fails and you need to re-convert the material at a later date, the workflow is a little more complicated to re-connect the footage within fcp. The trick is to maintain the same workflow so the files have the same name. This can get compiicated as the third part app may not consistently name the files.
