Sudden Shutdowns

Over the last few days my iMac has taken to shutting down unexpectedly, even if I'm in the middle of doing something on it at the time.
It's not in sleep mode, it's off completely, as if the power had been pulled.

If I switch it on again, it comes on as usual. If I set the Power Saving settings so as to come back on again after power loss, it will automatically come back on after this unprompted shutdown.

I've reset the SMU, PRAM and NVRAM, verified and repaired permissions, done the full hardware test (which reported no problems), and it still happened again earlier today!
The only thing I've not tried is a verify disk and repair disk, as I need to make a backup first just in case and haven't had time lately. Then leaving it on overnight with the system disk in to see if it still shuts off.

In the logs, I see an AppleSMU message with shutdown cause -122 or -110.

It's not covered by the power supply support extension programme, as it's a 2nd generation G5 iMac (2Ghz, ALS), which has not had any hardware modifications.

It's going to be a pain to take it in to an Apple Store, so I'm trying to cover everything possible before resorting to that, especially as the fault is intermittent (didn't happen at all on Saturday) and may not happen at all if I take it in!

Thanks in advance for any further advice, and I'd like to hear if anyone else has had a similar problem and how they resolved it!

This only happened to me 3 times with long intervals (months). Up untill sunday evening 10 september it happened again. Left it off. The next day ( found AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -122) after maybe half an hour down again. Waited a while, did the smu-resett, started up again.
No restart so far, so good. 2 weeks now.
This was helpfull:

SMU resett:
1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
3. Wait 10 seconds.
4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
5. Let go of the power button.
6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.

Ive been having the same problem with my Mac shutting down unexpectedly. It just started about a week or so ago. So I took it in to the apple store to get it looked at. They confirmed that the mac was randomly shutting down and now they are charging me to put in a new power supply and a new logic board. Huh? How can I be charged 1,060 for a defect in that computer? Its going to cost more to fix it than to buy a new one. What should I do? Can anyone please help?

We just got our iMac back from the shop. Going to test it out here, it finally got bad enough for it to shutdown randomly at the repair shop. Costs ran around $100 plus the initial $50 we paid the first time it didn't work for them. This was without Applecare.

Funny thing is, they said about three more iMacs came in with the same problem after we brought ours their the second time. I think its just a little more time before this has spread to almost all of the second gen iMac G5's.

I'm experiencing the same random, recurrent shutdowns as others are describing here. Its happening many times a day now. Mine is a "Rev B", with a serial number that falls just outside of the serial number range for the recall), but I believe I have AppleCare (need to double-check). If so, am I covered?

Also, should I back up before having it repaired? If so, I don't have any backup hardware but do have .mac. So should I back up to iDisk? But what if one of the random outages occurs during backup?
