OS 9.2.2 wont Install with OSX

I have a harddrive that was partitioned with OSX (10.3) on one half and OS 9.2.2 on the other. I reformatted the OS9 partition for a clean install and now when I put the OS9 install disk in and hold down the C key for booting, it will bypass the disk and start up in OSX. Now the computer just boots in OSX. How can I bypass this and get OS9 to load on that partition? Thanks.

Did you have Mac OS 9 drivers installed when you formatted your drive/partition? Boot from the OS X install disk, go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel, and Partition in the Main panel. Click on the partition on which you want to install OS 9. The Volume Format should be Mac OS Extended and the checkbox to install Mac OS 9 Drivers should be checked.

Good luck.

Runlogan, welcome, if the OS 9 driver are installed (above post) just insert the OS 9 CD after the computer boots into OS 10, double click the installation icon and choose the target partition. You should be able to install OS 9 this way.

You know, I did hold down the option key but it might of been just after the chime. It still went to the OS option but just showed the OSX partition. I think it might be that driver issue mentioned above. I will give that a go and see what happens. I did format it with the disk utility already on the OSX partition but it didnt give the OS9 driver option. So its on the install disk?

I didnt have much on the partitions so I reformatted and partitioned them.(with os9 drivers) Come to find out with my specific computer (Dual G4 1.25 MDD FW400) the latest operating system disk (9.2.2) for the dual boot to work. I have 9.2.0. Very weird. If you hold "option" down on startup you can see the two OS's but if you start in 9 it will give you the blinking "?" in the disk. I took the hard drive out and put it in an older mac (G4 450 AGP) and it fired right up with no problem. Thoughts?

Your computer shipped with OS 9.2.2 and that is the earliest OS you can install on it. (See Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer). Your restore disks should be able to install OS 9.2.2. If you don't have it you can call Apple or you can purchase it from applerescue.

I am not sure where you are in the process and where you want to go. Post back and let me know.

Good luck.

Im sorry you're right. The disk is 9.2.2. The problem is after formatting and partitioning the hard drive, I loaded one partition with OSX 10.3. If I put the 9.2.2 disk in to put it on the other partition (using the "option" key or the "c" key. It will always default right to the OSX system not letting me load it. If I do the same procedure to my older G4 450 there isnt any problem. It will start up with either partition. I take that same working hard drive out and put it in the G4 1.25 it wont let the OS9 partition boot. The screen gives me the little floppy disk with the "?" in it.

I just read the "ATI ROM Update Read Me" text file and it said to boot to OS 9 to install. However, I must have used OS 10 or some other work-around being that I could not boot into OS 9, I really can’t be sure. I think after the OS 10 drivers were updated then I was able to boot to OS 9. Hey, try it that way, good luck.

I have just read through the thread trying to see if you had stated your reason for wanting to install OS 9 and OS X on separate partitions. It is not necessary to have them separated, as they co-exist on the same partition very well. The only good reason I can think of wanting to have them separate is if you want to Option boot into OS 9 instead of using the startup manager.

A workaround for installing from the OS 9 disk is to copy by dragging. Yes, OS 9 can be copied by dragging. So if you have it installed on one computer or on an external HDD you can drag the System Folder ( Not folder named System) and the OS 9 Applications Folder from one drive directly onto the partition on which you want it. Since both folders are relatively small, you can burn them to a CD and copy them that way, too.

Good luck.
