I'm back, hope that all is well...

I had the genius look at my MBP and plug it in to Apple's mainframe.

after all systems were checked the problem was pronounced as a motherboard failure and way past the nvidia extended warrenty, which I learned was a major prob for this model.

So, I'm going to replace the mainboard and looking for suggestions as to where to get a new one, what would be a resonable price, and how to positively identify the one I have now - to get the correct replacement...

If the next mainboard gives me another 6.5 years, I should have enough $$$ saved up to buy a new one (before Skynet becomes aware)...

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks I'll check out the iFixit site, I was already looking at Powerbookmedic and saw prices there of 250$ or so which is not bad considering the cost of a new MBP!

I calculate the my present MBP cost me approx 17$/mo. for the time it was operational. If I add a new mainboard at 250 and in lasts 24mo that's only 10+$/mo where a new one would be 65/mo for those two years and of course the longer any comp lasts the less it cost/mo.

I might play with this old mb and bake it. I saw some great instructions! LOL

So the adventure continues, fortunately I have my trusty pc that I built 10-11 years ago ( it's no MBP! ), and I don't frustrate easily. And for portability the marvelous iPhone...

I'm baaaack...

Well I'm still playing with this MBP. I pulled the HHD and then connected it thru a usb port, did an option start and clicked on the recovery disc. the timer ran for about about 5 min. and - I got a screen discribing the "kernel panic".

It is the first real bit of info this machine has produced. It begins with...

panic(cpu 0 caller oxffffff800064c99b): "Unable to find driver for this platform:

And goes on from there, if this info is useful to you I can send the rest. I hate to buy a new MBP and learn later that there's a fix I missed and /or apple took the path of least resistance in their diagosis!

So your thoughts please...

Hello again!

They changed the format and I thought that this conversation was lost.

But before I bite the bullet and buy a new MBP, I'm looking for a way to contact apple with my complaint/situation. If you know of any phone # or email I would appreciate it. I did call apple care and was told that I didn't have the coverage and that they could not help and so forth. Beyond that I did not know what to do.

As it would happen, I was talking to a sales person at best buy, told him of the problem, and low and behold - he had the same MBP - with the same failure!

Maybe I should start a club...

What I would like to have happen is for Apple to slide off of 4-5 hundred on a new MBP. I feel that if I could contact the right people/person, I might have a shot.

Any suggestions please let me know whenever you can.

Thanks!

The only suggestion that I can offer is to bring your issue to a manager at an Apple store. At least you will be face to face with another human being. Whether you will have any success, I do not know.
