Viewsonic VX2025wm Sleep Problem

I used to do most of my editing on a Powerbook G4 using a Viewsonic VX2025wm 20.1" display, and the external monitor handled display sleep fine. It would read "no input" and then go to power save mode.

With the Mac Pro, the external display has real trouble with sleep. It reads "no input" goes to power save mode, and then immediately turns back on to read "no input", and back and forth over and over. The monitor still works fine on the Powerbook.

I do realize this is a Viewsonic issue, but their inept customer service people simply say that they don't guarantee this monitor with a Mac Pro. Strangely enough, my other Viewsonic (VX922) sleeps just fine as my secondary monitor.

Does anyone have any clue as to what causes this or any thoughts as to how I might tackle the problem? Maybe it's just a case of getting what I pay for (in this case, a display that is nowhere near as expensive as an Apple branded one).

Thanks!

Interesting...

Could it be my graphics card then? I have plugged the display into each different DVI port on the card (with two different cables) and have gotten the same result.

I just can't figure out whether I should keep hounding Viewsonic or try to see if Apple can check the graphics card. And of course, complicating this even more is the fact that my second Viewsonic sleeps just fine in either DVI port from the graphics card.

Frustrating...

One other thing to note:

When I shut down the Mac Pro, both displays accurately show there is no input, and then both go into low-power (sleep) mode.

Is there any reason why the display would sleep fine when the machine is off v.s. when the machine has set displays to sleep?

This just feels very much like a PRAM-type thing, something that can be reset to fix the problem, but neither the PRAM or SMB reset do anything.

Of course, dealing with Viewsonic is a complete mess. Their reps on the phone have no idea what they're talking about, and then after talking to a tech state that the VX2025wm doesn't support the Mac Pro.

Of course, my other viewsonic display is older and works JUST fine, so that logic is ridiculous. But they just won't let me talk them into taking the display back.

Can anyone think of any solution to this? I can't download drivers from NVIDIA because they only offer Linux and Windows downloads.

I have no reason to believe that my actual graphics card is the problem, because it drives my other display fine from both DVI ports. The only thing I ever had to do was reset the PRAM when I first got the machine, because the VX2025wm wasn't recognizing any connection at all.

I have the same problem, and it only happens with the DVI port. The VGA works fine. I would test it again, but my DVI port on the viewsonic died, and I am waiting for a replacement from viewsonic. For some reason they can't seem to get new monitors in stock for replacements, but they have a ton of refurbs... (viewsonic has a policy to replace a monitor with a new one if a problem occurs within 90 days. You can elect to get a refurb if you want however.)

When I get my replacement, I will see if the problem remains.

I'm seeing similar issues with my new Mac Pro with ATI X1900 XT video card. Fine on D-sub via the DVI-VGA converter, hates DVI and refuses to display at the panel's native resolution (1600x1200) Strangely the panel does not appear to be in sleep mode though because the power LED is green rather than amber. If I drop the resolution to 1280x1024 then the DVI connection works okay.

I have worked through the suggestions on the Apple support pages of NVRAM reset and booting from the installation DVD which starts up in 1152x870 and hence doesn't really prove anything in my case.

Ironically it all just worked with my Mac Mini Duo at 1600x1200, 60Hz refresh.

After reading this thread I'm beginning to think my Viewsonic VP2030b was not quite the bargain it initially appeared to be.
