Hi Imacri,

Thanks for your update, sorry to hear you too are still experiencing this annoying problem.

I have spoken again to the Apple support agent dealing with with this problem today. After messing around with some msconfig settings the problem did not go away, and the last thing he was advised to tell me by Apple technicians was to uninstall all security software ie McAfee and Trusteer Rapport on my system, which I did with NO success of solving the DEP message. All it done was provide a huge amount of grief to reinstall it all.

I've got to advise them that it had no effect on the problem and wait for the next step. But I think there running out of ideas now.

Will keep you posted, good luck

I'm having exactly the same issue of a DEP message when closing iTunes, since the lastest update, using Vista. I tried most of the same things that are mentioned above before discovering this thread.

For now I'm afraid that I can't add anything useful towards a solution, so I'll put up with the message and keep on watching here for any further news.

So I had the same issue.

This is what I did to fix it.

I went to run and ran MSConfig.

Then I disabled everyt Apple service in startup. (Itunes/Quicktime/etc)

Rebooted the PC

Then I just ran the program and it ran fine.

Oddly enough when they were enabled and I ran itunes, it showed duplicates of all the Apple services, which I think is what was tripping up DEP.

DEP still pops up when I close the program, but doesn't really affect me because I'm the one who was closing the program haha.

Hi T_Aprigliano:

Thanks for your feedback, but the issue being discussed in this thread is a problem with iTunes triggering a DEP error when Vista users try to close iTunes v. 11.2.2.3. Your final statement that "DEP still pops up when I close the program" indicates that your suggestion might not be the solution for other users in this thread.

Just to relate my own experience, I've already tried disabling iTunes and Apple Push from automatically loading at boot-up (I did this from Windows Defender's Software Explorer instead of msconfig) and also disabled the Apple Mobile Device and Bonjour services and it makes no difference on my machine. Under those conditions I can still use iTunes to play music, purchase items from the iTunes store and synch my iPod, but I still get the DEP error at every iTunes shutdown.

This is happening to me on a system that has only the following (and never anything more) installed:

Windows Vista 32-bit Business Edition SP2 - all the latest patches/updates installed

Acrobat 8.3.1

Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi software

iTunes (includes Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update, Bonjour)

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and 4.5.1

Microsoft Office Small Business 2007

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Silverlight

Hi Descendant_7 & Austinian,

Thanks for your input to this thread, I still have not managed to find a fix to this annoying problem. Thankfully it is only just annoying and does not affect anything else.

I'm still waiting for a reply from Apple support, I believe this problem is iTunes software based nothing to do with any existing programs or software of our PCs.

If you haven't read the whole thread, I have tried removing and reinstalling iTunes the 5 step method several times, removing QuickTime, removing all security software, starting iTunes in safe mode and many others attempts, Its all been hopeless.

Hopefully I will get a reply from Apple soon but I believe this as them stumped 😕

Will update you if I hear anything more. Good luck

I have been having exactly the same issue since the last update and can confirm that I get the message when closing Itunes without having gone to the Itunes store. I will continue to follow this thread since it has save me not having to waste my time re-installing and it appears there are issues going back to an earlier version. Hopefully Apple will fix soon.

Hi Biggestted:

I just want to report that an upgrade today to iTunes v. 11.3.0.54 did not solve the problem on my 32-bit Vista machine. I still get the Windows DEP error "iTunes was closed. To help protect your computer, Data Execution Prevention has closed iTunes" popping up in my system tray approx. 30 seconds after I close the iTunes v. 11.3.0.54 GUI.

Instead of doing an over-the-top update, I did a complete removal and reinstall of all Apple components as described in turningtest2's article Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates, which included a manual deletion of the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple folder after the re-boot for my machine. The fact that this update didn't fix the DEP error doesn't really come as a surprise since the release notes indicate that v. 11.3.0 is a minor update that adds a new feature for iTunes Extras for HD movies.

Hi Imacri,

Thanks for your update, that im still not the only one with this annoying problem.

I too updated iTunes to 11.3 last night BST with fingers crossed hoping that it would have a fix included for our DEP problem, but no luck.

I have had further dealing with Apple support to no avail, which is why I have not posted any updates. The latest thing they required was my system logs which I had to install a program from Microsoft, but it didn't work because the commands Apple where telling me to write are not recognized. They are however still on the case and have called back last week with new commands for the logs but I was away. I gotta say they are being very helpful albeit no fix yet.

Hopefully we might get somewhere next week, I will keep you posted on any relevant info.

Hang in there
