Hi Chrisveronesi:

As Biggestted noted above, there is no solution yet to the specific problem being discussed in this thread where closing iTunes v. 11.2..x or v. 11.3.x on a machine running the Vista OS results in a Windows Data Execution Protection (DEP) error for iTunes.exe.

If you are using an OS other than Win Vista, or if your error occurs when you are trying to start or use iTunes, there are a few other threads in this forum with possible solutions - see tom0702's post here in rschetitini's thread iTunes 11.2 Crashes on Startup for one suggestion.

I uninstalled the new version of iTunes and installed version 11.1.5.5 instead.

Then I followed the instructions here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6561

I created an 80-playlist and burned a CD. I received that stupid DEP error (4000), BUT

I decided to try to play the CD anyway-- and I could (on the computer that created the

CD).

Now I'll try to play it in my car . . . .

Hi Sports_Fan,

Thanks for your input to this thread, however I don't think your experiencing the same problem as the rest of us here.

When I and everyone else on this thread open iTunes and then close it again we get a DEP error message pop up and a problem report created. We don't do anything in iTunes, simply open it have a look then close it.

This as been going on for a while now, I am waiting for a solution from Apple Support after giving them all the info they required.

Keep you all posted.

I think this is a common problem for most (if not all) users running Vista. Just look at the number of views this thread has received. Since it does not really affect the itunes function (or anything else) most people have not complained other than to call support on occasion. For me it is just a nuisance, but after having it continue through a couple of updates, I wanted to be sure that it wasn't a virus. After looking at a number of posts, including this one, I feel confidant that it is a software nuisance and not a virus. Hopefully, it will be fixed eventually...

Hello, just another iTunes user running Vista who gets a DEP notification every time he closes iTunes. This thread's popularity is at least partly due to the fact that it was mistakenly marked "solved." I recently updated to iTunes version 11.3.1.2 and the problem is definitely unsolved. I get the DEP notification even if I just signed out from iTunes store, although it seems to appear several seconds later in that case.

Interestingly, it doesn't matter which DEP setting is selected in Advanced system settings. Since when has iTunes been an essential Windows program or service? (Yes I did reboot after changing the DEP setting.)

User uploaded file

It is possible to completely disable DEP via elevated command prompt, and indeed that does stop the pesky notifications - but of course I wouldn't recommend that for security reasons. However, geeks with plenty of time on their hands might want to investigate Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit as a possible alternative to DEP.

Before I go, I'd like to beat a couple of "dead horse" solutions that were proposed in this thread:

(1) Uninstall Quicktime: I never installed it in the first place. Checked System32 for remnants anyway, found none.

(2) Uninstall all security software: No Thanks! I've been running iTunes and AVG together for 3 years without any false positives involving Apple software. Disabling AVG doesn't help, nor does it matter whether Windows Defender is turned on or off. Biggested uses McAfee, Imacri uses Norton, austinian uses Microsoft Security Essentials. What security software would Apple recommend?
