Hi there Biggestted and all contributors!

I see that we are all still suffering the damage done by the iTunes update back in May this year.

I'm also a supporter of Johnny DEP's treatment of the "Dead Horses"

Likewise I have used AVG since Adam was a lad and had no"conflicts" with ANY other software.... excepting malware of course!

That was a silly defence for something that was quite obviously broken by the May update.

As for the finger pointed at QT, I've not had that on my machine for about 5 years!

C'mon Cupertino, get yer *** in gear and put this right! 😠

Imacri's recent posts inspired me to attempt an installation of v. 11.1.5.5, and somewhat to my surprise I was successful! Apparently Apple doesn't make fundamental modifications to the itl database very often, i.e. it did not matter that the backup I used was much older than 11.1.5.5. There's probably such a thing as an iTunes Library backup that's too old to work with 11.1.5.5, but the one I used was nearly a year old. However the fact remains that your current iTunes Library.itl will not work with 11.1.5.5, so if you wish to downgrade you should first study the link posted by Imacri. I apologize for any confusion that may have been caused by my posts yesterday concerning downgrading, which is clearly one possible way to avoid DEP notifications. I'll bet I could update normally to a DEP-compatible version, if Apple would kindly release one.

A June 19 post by austinian suggests another hypothesis (albeit half-baked) about the DEP issue: Like austinian, I have Microsoft Silverlight installed, but I don't know much about it. Is there anyone experiencing this problem who does not have Silverlight installed? Might be worth a try.

Hi Johnny DEP:

Cheers for the update, and thanks for letting us know the update from iTunes v. 11.0.5 to v. 11.1.5 didn't cause a problem with your iTunes library.

I don't have Silverlight installed on my computer, so that isn't the cause of my DEP error when I close iTunes (any version from v. 11.2.0 to v. 11.3.1) on my 32-bit Vista machine.

Hey all,

Just an update, I received a call from Apple support yesterday asking to confirm some of the problem details. They are currently working on the problem supposedly sifting through the large system dump file I sent them a while ago.

They are hoping to release a fix with an update within a month, but to be honest it sound like this has them stumped.

Anyway that's the latest.

All the best.

Folks I'm new here so bear with me.

I had a relative contact me today with the problem of a ITunes DEP issue with on a Vista machine,

I've spent the whole day on this and confirm that stripping everything out of Vista to do with Apple products including Registry settings and re installing ITunes following the guidelines did work...however the user still gets the DEP message on closure of the Itunes program.

My important observation though is I created another normal user for myself and when I open and close Vista I don't get the DEP error on shutdown.....I since found out that my relative is administrator for the machine, which indicates his rights is allowing him to do something DEP doesn't like.

I suspect that the excessive rights is or could be the issue which begs the question what would an administrator account be doing that a normal user wouldn't, interesting though.

If I learn any more I'll let you know

Earlonics, is that machine running 32-bit or 64-bit Vista? Many of us are running 32-bit. I almost never log in as administrator for security reasons, and my iTunes Library is on an underprivileged user account, but I was getting a DEP notification every time I exited iTunes until I downgraded to an older version. Some users have said that they didn't get a DEP notice if they closed iTunes immediately after logging off at the iTunes store, but I couldn't duplicate that myself. Perhaps it isn't normal user vs. administrator, but rather newly-created account vs. dirty account? I'm not in a position to test, having downgraded.

Hi the machine is running 32 bit you might be right the fact that I created a new account might be more of a reason why this worked if I get access to the machine again I'll change the privileged level of my account and see if that changes anything. But I thought I would post my observation just in case it leads to a permanent solution.

Cheers

Hey Earlonics and Johnny DEP,

Earlonics thanks for your observations with this problem it indeed just makes this annoying little problem even weirder.

I have and always have had a guest account on my Vista 32bit system which very rarely gets used. I've just logged onto it opened the latest iTunes 11.3.1.2 then closed it down and NO DEP warning message appeared, I tried a few times with the same result.

I then logged onto my administrator account opened iTunes and closed and YES the DEP message popped up to say Hi.

This is just as weird as when you sign in to your iTunes Store account then close down iTunes the DEP DOES NOT appear. Mystery???

I will forward this info to Apple support, it may help.

All the best

Hey Earlonics,

Just noticed on your thread, you said

My important observation though is I created another normal user for myself and when I open and close Vista I don't get the DEP error on shutdown.....I since found out that my relative is administrator for the machine, which indicates his rights is allowing him to do something DEP doesn't like.

Did you mean and when I open and close iTunes ?

Sep 1, 2014 1:51 PM in response to Biggestted

Biggested and Earlonics, it might be helpful to state which of the two DEP settings is selected under Advanced System Settings / Performance Settings, and maybe test to see if changing it matters. I posted a screenshot of the DEP tab at the bottom of page 5. Of course it has been established that you cannot add an exception for iTunes when using the bottom setting. My biggest surprise was finding that changing to the top setting, "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only," did not resolve the issue for me.
